Jane Prudhoe was born in the December quarter of 1841. The birth was registered in the Tynemouth Union registration district in Northumberland, England[1]. Her mother's maiden name is given as Farray (sic).
Family and Siblings
Ann Ferry (sic) married Robert Russell Prudhoe on 14 April 1839 in the Church of England parish church in Long Benton[2], about 4 miles north-east of Newcastle upon Tyne. Long Benton was Ann's place of birth. Shortly thereafter their first child, Alice, was born in the September quarter of that year[3].
While she was pregnant with her second child Jane, Ann (stated age of 20 years), along with her husband Robert Prudhoe (aged 25 years), and first child Alice (aged 2 years) were enumerated in the Earsdon district in the 1841 Census[4] while living on Wheatridge Row[5], a row of workers' terrace houses in Seaton Delaval in Tynemouth registration district approximately 6 miles north-west of Tynemouth. Robert's occupation is not stated, but he was later a grocer (in 1851) and draper (in 1861), so it may be conjectured that he was in some sort of retail trade, perhaps associated with the Seaton Delaval Colliery which had recently opened in 1838, and which was on the Newcastle-Backworth-Morpeth line[6]. The village railway station had opened in August 1841 around the time of Jane's birth[7].
Jane was born in Seaton Delaval, along with her parents' third child, Robert, who was born in the Mar qtr, 1844[8].
The Ordnance Survey map shows many austere rows of terrace houses in Seaton Delaval and surrounding villages, which presumably were built to house the burgeoning colliery workforce. The image attached to this profile shows Wheatridge Row as it was in 1910, more images of the colliery and village are shown in the Flickr image album Seaton Delaval, Seaton Sluice, New Hartley, Seghill, Holywell & surrounding area album[9].
Jane's next three siblings, George, born Dec qtr. 1846[10]; William, born Sep qtr. 1848[11] and Alice, born Dec qtr. 1850[12] were all born in Murton, Northumberland[13], another colliery village about 3 miles south-east of Seaton Delaval. The family must have moved to Murton some time after 1844 when Robert had been born in Seaton Delaval.
The family were enumerated in the 1851 Census in Murton[14]. The household included: Robert (aged 35 years), Ann (32 years), Robert (4 years), George (4 years), William (2 years), and Alice (6 months)[15]. Jane is not enumerated in this household, so it is conjectured that she was either omitted from the schedule, or was located in another place on Census night. The first child born to her parents, Alice, was not enumerated and another Alice, born 1850 was included in the household. The first Alice,
firstborn daughter of Ann and Robert died aged 3 years[16].
Jane's youngest sibling, James was born June qtr. 1850[17].
He was not enumerated in the 1851 Census, (when he would have been less than a year old), nor in the 1861 Census. It may be conjectured that he did not survive his infancy, or perhaps, less probable, was in the care of another person.
Jane and her family at the time of the 1861 Census were residing at the The Allotment, a cluster of presumably colliery related housing a mile west of Murton, and adjacent to the Shire Moor Colliery which existed as a coal pit since at least 1789[18]. The Census return[19]
included: Robert R (aged 44 years, grocer), Ann (41 years), Jane (19 years), Robert (17 years), George (15 years) and William (13 years). The three sons were all described as coal miners.
By the time of the 1871 Census Jane and all her siblings are conjectured to have moved away from their parents' home. In the 1871 Census Robert and Ann Prudhoe were living at 26 Ayres Quay Road in Bishop Wearmouth Parish in Sunderland municipal borough[20]. The household included Robert R Prudson (aged 53 years, green grocer), Ann (51 years) and Mary Snowdon (an aunt, aged 80 years).
Marriage and children
Jane married George Dixon on 16 April 1865 in the parish church of the Church of England in Tynemouth, Northumberland[21]. George was stated to be aged 23 years, both were single.
Jane and George had six children whose births are recorded in the statutory registers:
Jane and her young family were living in The Allotments in Preston township in the Municipal Borough of Tynemouth, at the time of the 1871 Census[30]. The household included: George (aged 29 years, coal miner), Jane (aged 29, wife), John (aged 5), Robert P (aged 1), Thomas (aged 6 months), and George Prudhoe (aged 24, unmarried, coal miner, brother to Jane). They appear to be enumerated in the same home in the subsequent 1881 and 1891 Censuses. It is conjectured that The Allotments were located between Preston and Chirton, they are not identified on the Ordnance Survey map of 1894-5[31].
Jane, her husband George and their children were enumerated in the 1881 Census in The Allotments in Preston[32]. The household included George (aged 39 years, coal miner), Jane (aged 39), John (aged 15, coal screener), Robert P. (aged 11), Thomas (aged 10), Isabella (aged 5). Jane's daughters Alice Ann and Ann were not enumerated in the family household. Their whereabouts on the Census night has not be ascertained.
By the time of the 1901 Census Jane seems to have died, because George her husband is recorded in the Census return as "widower". He was living at the same address in The Allotment with his brother-in-law, George Prudhoe, similarly widowed[33]. George (aged 59 years, coal miner stonemason), shared the house with George Prudhoe (aged 55 years, coal lamp minder), and Mary Cowan (aged 35 years, spinster, domestic servant, born in Backworth, Northumberland).
Death and burial
The date of Jane's death cannot be definitively ascertained. In the period 1892-1901 there were two females named Jane Dixon born in 1841 (±1 year) whose deaths are registered in the Tynemouth registration district. See Research note below.
Research Notes
Jane's parents were enumerated in the 1861 Census in their household at 26 Ayres Quay Road, Sunderland. This was on the west side of Gill's Cemetery about ½ mile west of the city centre[34].
The following two death registration in the Tynemouth registration district may relate to Jane (Prudhoe) Dixon born 1841 in Seaton Delaval:
No record of the burial for Jane Dixon in either 1894 or 1897 can be found in many parish records in Tynemouth Parish. No grave memorial has be located for Jane Dixon who died or was buried in 1894-97 in Tynemouth. No will for Jane Dixon (died 1894 or 1897) has been found in Find a Willhttps://probatesearch.service.gov.uk/#calendar
