The Vidrine-Prudhomme Tragedy
Octave P. Vidrine surrendered to the Sheriff here Monday morning, having been charged with killing one son of Angelas Prudhomme and seriously wounding another on last Sunday. The facts leading up to this deplorable affair, as related by Vidrine, are as follows:
The Prudhommes had a difficulty with a young son of Vidrine's about some geese, and followed him into the house and called him out to light, cursing him and his mother for some time. Young Vidrine refused to come out, whereupon the Prudhommes threatened to come into the house and take him out. At this time Octave Vidrine, the father, appeared on the scene and commanded the Prudhomme boys not to come into his yard, and if they did so, it would be at their peril. They dismounted from their horses and proceeded to climb over the yard fence when Vidrine opened fire on them with a double-barreled shotgun. The others returned the fire with their pistols. The result of Vidrine's fire is that one of the Prudhomme is dead and the other is dangerously wounded. Vidrine secured bail soon after his surrender. He is considered a peaceable and industrious man, and at this writing public opinion appears to be in his favor.

THE OTHER SIDE
A representative of the COURIER interviewed Sidney Lafleur on Tuesday, brother-in-law of the men who were shot by Vidrine. Lafleur says that the trouble started between himself and young Vidrine about some geese, which belonged to Lafleur. He asked if the geese were at Vidrine's, and young V. told him no. Mrs. V. appeared and asked L. if he thought they would steal his geese. He answered he did not know about that. Octave Vidrine subsequently met Lafleur and told him he would have to settle with him for insulting his wife, and L. told him all right, and they were to meet a few minutes later. The two Prudhomme boys accompanied Lafleur, and met Octave Vidrine and his son in the public road about 12 acres from Vidrine's house. A quarrel then started between L. and the Vidrine's about the geese, and then Octave Vidrine accused one of the Prudhomme boys of having beaten his son a few days before. Prudhomme denied this and word followed. P. told V. to put his gun down and he would fight him. This he refused to do, and dared P. to put his hands in his pocket. As lie did so, Vidrine shot him dead, and then shot his brother, and turning to his son told him to shoot Lafleur. Neither of the Prudhommes were armed, and the one who was shot by Vidrine's second load declares that he did not say a word to the Vidrines and was shot for nothing. He is now in a dying condition. He is 21 years of age: his dead brother is 22. The father of the Prudhommes, Angelas Prudhomme, is a respectable, fine looking man, and is greatly distressed about the affair.
