Biography

I am not convinced that Joseph Pruett was the father of Catherine but his proximity in 1800 to Henry Banks point in that direction. The 1800 Wilkes County, North Carolina Census[1] shows the following: Joseph Pruett and his wife both ages of 26 and under 45 in 1800 had the following children in their home in Wilkes County:

  • Joseph Pruett (Head) age 26-45
  • 1 Female (his wife ?) age 26-45
  • Boys:
  • 1 under 10
  • 1 10-16
  • 1 16-26
  • Girls:
  • 3 under 10
  • 1 10-16

Henry Banks and William Laws posted a Marriage Bond in Wilkes County, North Carolina on 16th Day of September, 1807. The purpose of this bond was for the lawful marriage to Catherine Pruett. It was witnessed by W(N) Robinett. The amount of the bond was 500 Pounds. [3] Henry signed with his "X" Mark.

The typed index of North Carolina Marriages reflect the same information regarding their marriage. [4] It also shows several other Banks men who were related to Henry.

Another source document for their marriage is found here.[5]where it shows:

  • Name: Catherine Pruet
  • Gender: Female
  • Spouse Name: Henry Banks
  • Spouse
  • Birth Place: NC
  • Spouse Birth Year: 1785
  • Number Pages: 1

Catherine likely died sometime around 1829 either in North Carolina or in Perry County, Kentucky. Henry moved his entire family to Perry County and is found there in 1830. Henry is living in Perry without a female over 30 years old. His oldest daughter is present and is 20-30 years old. She's the oldest female. There is one other daughter and 3 sons under 20.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Catherine by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Catherine:

Catherine is frequently conflated with the family of Col. Joseph Prewitt and his wife Leah Moss. This appears on nearly ever ancestry tree I see.
