John was born about 1730 in Virginia. He was possibly the son of Samuel Walter Pruitt and Elizabeth A. Hawker.
His middle name may have been Fields. Samuel Walter's father may have been John Fields Pruitt.
His brother?, Henry married Ann Fields, so perhaps there was a Fields family around and perhaps his father named John for him. There is no proof of this, nor that his middle name was Fields.
Soon after Samuel Pruitt’s death in 1760, his 3 sons, John, Samuel II and Zachariah, moved to an area of Halifax Co, VA, that later became Pittsylvania Co, VA. Pittsylvania Co Tax records in the 1760s confirm that Samuel II, Zachariah, and John were living there.
The question is: was John (the father of Obadiah) and John (the son of Samuel) the same person?
John Pruitt (the father of Obadiah) was in Goochland Co, VA (as the births of his children on The Douglas Register indicate) from at least 1758 to 1770. This makes me wonder whether John Pruitt who married Alice Addison, was indeed the son of Samuel Pruitt of Maryland. There were several John Pruitts in Virginia, as "The Prewitt/Pruitt Records of Virginia" show (see link in sources below).
John married Alice Addison about 1752, probably Goochland Co, VA. (Their marriage is not listed in the Douglas Register, so they were probably married before the Register was started in 1756.)
Douglas Register of Goochland Co, Va:
1758, Aug. 9, Obadiah Addison Pruitt born in St. James Parish to John Pruitt and Alice Addison (p54). He was baptized on April 1, 1759 (p279)
(but according to Obadiah’s pension application in 1834 he said, “I was born in Goochland County, Va. in the year 1755 on the 6th day of July as I always heard and believe.")

There was a John Prewit listed on the roll for military service, July 15, 1777, Virginia. On the same page was Caleb Addison (perhaps Alice's brother.)
