Biography

Flag of Virginia
John Puckett Sr. was a Virginia colonist.

John Puckett left 500 acres in Bristol Parish, Henrico County for his family. It had been granted to him on 27 January 1665 for transporting 10 persons.[1][2]

"John Puckett did by his last will and testament make Anne Puckett, his relict, his executor, and said Anne Puckett was given authority to sell property. Oct. 1, 1677."[3]
John's death was probably sometime in the months before 1 August 1677, when his widow Anne was made executor of his estate in Henrico County.[4][5] Anne left a will dated 1679.[6]
"By June 2, 1679 we know that both John and Anne are dead by an agreement acknowledged in the county between their children, William Puckett, John Puckett, Thomas Puckett and Richard Womack, husband of daughter Mary Puckett, for the division of cattle and hogs of the estate of John Puckett and Anne, his wife."[7]

Children

Four of John and Anne's children survived them, as they were named in a 1679 agreement about the division of their parents' estate (daughter Mary was married to Richard Womack at the time).[7]
They gave their ages in depositions at a court held 2 January 1679, and "several other cases in 1684 and 1688. In 1679 Mary said in court that she was about 22 years old. She could have been born in 1656."[1]
  1. John Puckett, born 1654, married Eliza Allen (license granted 18 March 1691, Geo. Worsham, Security).[8][9]
  2. Mary Puckett, born 1656/7, married Richard Womack before 1679;[1] married John Grainger before 1 April 1690.[10]
  3. William Puckett, born 1657, married Anne before 8 Dec. 1688 (when she signed a deed),[11] living in 1697 (named in Thomas Womack's will).[12]
  4. Thomas Puckett, born 1658, married Mary Womack (sister of Richard Womack),[13] living in 1697 (named in Thomas Womack's will).[12]
Richard Womack's estate was appraised in 1684.[13] His brother Thomas Womack's 21 January 1697 will, probated in August 1697, names relatives, including brother Abraham Womack, Puckett God-children, and daughters of "Will Puckett" (Elizabeth) and Thomas Puckett (Frances). He leaves "wool, linen not bequeathed" to "Abraham Womack, Wm. Puckett, Thos. Puckett, and John Grainger."[12]
Mary's brother Thomas Puckett married Mary Womack, Richard & Thomas Womack's sister,[13] and it is believed that William Puckett's wife, Anne, was also their sister.[7] John Grainger married Richard Womack's widow Mary.[11] This was probably a second marriage for them both, as John is thought to have first married another Womack sister.[10]

Research Notes

Profile Maintenance Category Notes

I cleaned up the bio & source list and removed the Needs Style Review maintenance category. I added back the Needs Location Research category. ~ Noland-165 20:35, 10 October 2021 (UTC)
  • Needs Location Research: Death location in Virginia resolved (see Location Notes). Birth location research remains. The entry in the datafield was changed to Oxfordshire, England (from Dorchester, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England) on 10 October 2021 & then to just England. ~ Noland-165 20:35, 10 October 2021 (UTC)
    • Dorchester, Oxfordshire? (See this comment in the G2G question seeking help for his birth/baptism.)
    • checked freereg.org.uk for birth/baptism record: no John Pucketts baptized anywhere in England between 1610 and 1650. Searches of Dorset and Oxfordshire in same timeframe found marriage records for Pucketts in Dorset, no Puckett records in Oxfordshire. An Ann Nin is not found the records (1590-1650). ~ Noland-165 21:11, 10 October 2021 (UTC)
    • checked England Project's reliable sources page for additional places to check - did not find any Pucketts in 1623 Visitation of Dorset or Oxfordshire's marriage bonds. Other "finds" seemed less relevant.[14] ~ Noland-165 18:53, 12 October 2021 (UTC)
  • Needs Sources: Source citation format should be cleaned up to substitute citations to the underlying sources, if any, cited in the secondary ancestry trees, Family Data collection databases, FamilySearch profiles, myheritage trees, etc. - I did a start on this. It seems best for those are the Gee book[15] and the Valentine Papers (see source list). ~ Noland-165 15:35, 9 October 2021 (UTC)
  • Needs Relationship Review: Consolidating the lists of children (and other family members) revealed problems. Research is needed still for #Children and #Wife (if only to determine that the extra three from an unknown source should be deleted). The profiles attached as children also need review. The Gee book & Valentine Papers are probably the best references for them also.[15] ~ Noland-165 04:29, 9 October 2021 (UTC)
    • Wives: Lacking a source/sources and no indication that he married multiple times, I think that the names of the extra wives should be deleted. ~ Noland-165 20:35, 10 October 2021 (UTC)
    • Children: The two Davids and Ruth need sources identifying them as children of this John and his wife Ann. Profiles attached for William, John, Mary (m Womack, Granger) are supported as his children by the 1679 record.[16] ~ Noland-165 10 October 2021

DNA Information

Gary Puckett advises that there are two Puckett families in America that date to early colonial times:[17]
Y-DNA results have verified that there were two separate Puckett family lines established in early colonial times. It has generally been assumed that because of their arrival at around the same time in early Virginia that they were brothers. This assumption is not supported by Y-DNA testing of the descendants of these two men. The Y-DNA of these men has been clearly defined and is posted on the Puckett DNA page along with links to the pedigrees.[17]

Parents

Most online trees agree that his parents were Henry and Ann (Nin) Puckett,[18][19][20] but considering there were two distinct branches of Pucketts in colonial Virginia who were considered brothers prior to DNA research, we cannot know which John Puckett was their son (assuming one was) or which of the many siblings listed by online trees belong to which branch (except through examination of Y-DNA results - see DNA Information, above).
In trying to find a birth or baptism record in England for John, a couple of possibilities arose, but none for a John, son of Henry. Considering the naming conventions of the time, if John's father had been named Henry, you would expect to find Henrys in the family tree but the first descendant of John's named Henry is the namesake of the wife's father, not the husband who was John's descendant.
See this G2G thread: "Did I miss a possible source for birth/baptism record - England (Dorset or Oxford), 1620ish, for John Puckett?" Although a question seeking a source for his baptism, it covered much more - including a comment that Dorchester, Oxfordshire is a legitimate location - and nothing to support "Henry & Ann (Nin) Puckett" as parents, who were detached 13 October 2021.
Potential parents:
  • Willyam Frauncis Alyas Puckett of Castle Hedingham - record of Essex baptism for son John on 19 Aug 1621 found in FindMyPast[21]
  • William in Surrey ("There is at least one John Puckett b. in Surrey" - see this G2G comment).
  • John and Elizabeth (Smith) Puckett, married in Dorset in 1629: "marriage in Steeple in Dorset in 1629, John Puckett married to Elizabeth Smith 28 July" (see this G2G comment).
Detached as parents:
Other children attached as their children (as of 13 October 2021) might not be theirs either - and if not theirs, perhaps they were John's siblings:
As noted earlier, there are no apparent namesakes for Henry Puckett in this John's tree. And while there are plenty of Williams, the name could be in honor of "Will Jefferies", Ann's father - according to one online tree.[22]

Middle Name

Although family names as middle names became popular in the 1700s in colonial Virginia, in the early 1600s, middle names were rare. No reliable source has been found for "Ishom"[6] and it has been removed as the middle name of this John Puckett. Likewise, no reliable source has been found for his son William's middle name of "Smith". Gee's The roots... of the Puckett family tree has an Isham Puckett born 1724 (citing the Bristol Parish Register), and notes that an "Isom Puckett witnesses a deed in Union County, South Carolina in 1786.[23]

Wife

The WikiTree profile attached as his wife - Anne Ann (Jefferys) Puckett (abt.1628-abt.1679), aka Jeffries - does not show a marriage date/location in the datafields as of 8 October 2021, although most online trees say they married in Henrico County in 1649. For example: "Married Anne Jeffreys on 1649 at Henrico Co, Virginia; Anne Jeffreys: Birth: ABT 1628 in Henrico Co, Virginia. Death: 1679 in Henrico Co, Virginia."[24]
Most sources also mention just one wife - Ann (or Anne) Puckett, born Jeffreys. One, however, listed four wives for him:[19]
  1. Anne Puckett (born Jeffreys)[19]
  2. Anne Pugh[19] - nothing found on an Anne (Pugh) Puckett (11 Oct. 2021)
  3. Elizabeth Elam[19] - in searching for potential profiles, "Allen" profiles were returned; perhaps this entry was meant as Elizabeth Allen, wife of this John's son John.
  4. Mabel Walthall[19] - not this John Puckett's wife; probably Mabel Walthall (1701-abt. 1775) whose profile is attached to Womack Puckett (abt.1696-1757). This John's son William is also attached to a Walthall: Mary Mabel (Walthall) Puckett (1684-1753). (as of 11 October 2021)
Gee's The roots... of the Puckett family tree provides the following Jeffreys connection, through John and Anne's granddaughter: "See will of William Jeffreys April 24, 1708. He speaks of God-daughter Anne Puckett, dau. of John Puckett. (Hen. Co. Rec. Book 1706-09, p. 96)".[13]
John's FindAGrave memorial notes that his wife Anne "died in 1679. Her will lists the division of property among their 4 children." It also states that "the estate was divided among their children as follows: Land grant 27 JAN 1665 3" [sic].[6] If her will is cited in Gee's book, I missed it.[15]

Immigration

John Puckett's FindAGrave memorial states that he came to Virginia in 1637, when John Groves of Elizabeth City claimed him as a headright,[6] but a source for this is needed. It is believed that John married (c1649) and raised his family in Virginia, so he was in Virginia before 1650.
By their depositions in 1679 and later, his children living at that time had been born in the 1650s,[1]
Neither Groves nor Puckett is found in the most common references for early Virginia settlers (they apparently were not early enough).

Gee's The roots... of the Puckett Family includes a collection of "Puckett Land Grants from the Virginia Land Grant Office, Richmond, VA."[25] that has the following entries of interest:
  • Thomas Puckett granted 137 A. in Rappahannock Co. for importing 3 persons Aug. 21, 1665. Book 5, 1661-66.
  • John Puckett granted 500 A. in Bristol Parish, Henrico Co. for transporting 10 persons into county, Jan. 27, 1665. Sir Wm. Berkeley, Gov. Book 5, 1661-66.
  • William and Thomas Puckett granted 757 A., Co. of Henrico, Par-ish of Bristol, north side of Appon1attox [Appomattox?] River, lying just above land of William Baugh on Poirces Baile Creek. One part lay along line of Richard Womack' s land. 500 A. of this land left by last will and testament of their father, being the 500 A. above. 257 A. being for transporting six persons, one of these was Gild ( or Giles) Puckett. Book 7, 1679-89.

Location Notes

He was born in England.[6] Perhaps in Dorchester, Oxfordshire; perhaps in Dorset.[26]
He was granted land in Bristol Parish, Henrico County in 1665,[25] where he died 1 August 1677.[6] Many online trees show Lunenburg (with a variety of spellings) together with Henrico County as his death location, but this is in error (Lunenburg is a county also, created in 1746, and not close to Henrico County).[27] Bristol Parish was formed in 1643 and served Henrico County until 1735.[28][29]

Additional Children

From the 2 June 1679 agreement cited by The roots... of the Puckett family tree (Henrico Colonial Records, Book I p. 90),[7] we know that four of John and Anne's children survived them (William, John, Thomas and Mary).
The following list of children was a consolidation of various lists previously given separately on this profile (prior to 8 October 2021; since updated). Colonial families were usually large, and considering that John and Anne are said to have married in 1649, they enjoyed nearly 25 years of marriage and most likely had closer to a dozen children than just the four who were living in 1679, but better sources are needed.

Additional Biographical Notes

Biographical notes:
  • John Ishom Puckett, Sr. is noteworthy as being the patriarch of one of the two Puckett lines in America. We note the large number of siblings without knowing exactly which ones came across the pond.[41][42]
  • John was born in 1619. Conflicting documentation shows John was born in either the City of Oxford, Oxfordshire, England, or Dorchester, Dorset, England.[6]
  • John married Anne Jefferys in 1649 in Henrico County, Virginia. He died Aug. 1, 1677 in Henrico County, Virginia Colony.[6]

Excerpt from Puckett Research

John Puckett is long considered to be the first of the Puckett line to emigrate from England to the American colonies. Following is an excerpt from Gee's book, The roots and some of the branches of the Puckett family tree.[1]
"The first generation of Pucketts in Virginia and the South, so far as we know, is represented by the John Puckett who received a grant of 500 A. [acres] in Bristol Parish, Henrico Co., Va., Jan. 27, 1665. His wife was named Anne. John Puckett did by his last will and testament make Anne Puckett, his relict, his executor, and said Anne Puckett was given authority to sell property. Oct. 1, 1677. (Henrico Co. Records, Book I, p. 35)[1]
"By June 2, 1679 we know that both John and Anne are dead by an agreement acknowledged in the county between their children, William Puckett, John Puckett, Thomas Puckett and Richard Womack, husband of daughter Mary Puckett, for the division of cattle and hogs of the estate of John Puckett and Anne, his wife. The will of John Puckett seems to have been lost hence some legal agreement was necessary. (Henrico Colonial Records, Book I p. 90)[1]
"The Census of 1790 shows the great majority of the Pucketts of Virginia in Chesterfield Co. which was cut off from Henrico in 1749. We can safely assume that all the Pucketts of the South at the time of the first census were descendants of this original John Puckett." [1]
See the caveat noted above (DNA Information) concerning more recent Y-DNA evidence calling this conclusion into question.[17]

  14. For example, I found a "Mary Puckett" mentioned in a 1625 will probate record for Francis Robinson (testator's granddaughter, not married & not yet 21), but cannot identify who she might be in WikiTree (if a blood relative, apparently the child of a daughter Robinson m Puckett, neither of whom appear to be named in the will, which names sons and daughter Faith Farndon, and names Faith's children as Francis, Michael, and "Nathaniel Samuel and Grace"). However, she is perhaps not a blood relative, as most of the descendants named are given houses; granddaughter Mary Puckett is left £10 - the same as "Anne Hopes, servant of the testator", which to me implies she was a step-daughter of one of his sons.

I have started a research page for this family - see Space: Colonial Virginia Pucketts. It is one that I was only peripherally interested in - a Waltham connection to another family I was researching - but since I am not related to either the Pucketts or the Walthams, I doubt that I will be doing much more on the Pucketts. The space page is Open, if you care to use it. If you would like to be added as a manager of Space: Colonial Virginia Pucketts, let me know either by private message or in a trusted list request.

Discussion(s) at https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/1314226/ indicate a lot of doubt about this John's parents. I intend to detach Henry and Ann (Nin) Puckett and expand the "Parents" section under research notes.
posted by Liz (Noland) Shifflett
Having heard no objections about detaching Henry & Ann (and found no sources to support them as parents), I've detached the profiles of Henry Puckett-170 and Ann Nin-6 as parents. If sources are found, they can always be reattached.

I've completed the work I intend to do for this profile - unless the G2G question I just posted results in more info. See https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/1314226/possible-baptism-record-england-dorset-oxford-1620ish-puckett

I've posted comments to the two profiles attached as his daughter Mary, noting that his daughter is known to have married (1) Richard Womack, (2) John Granger - no Westbrook marriage found, so Mary Elizabeth (Puckett) Westbrook (1647-1717) needs to be detached as daughter of John & Anne.

P.S. This Geni entry for Thomas Puckett lists a daughter Elizabeth Westbrook (as of 9 October 2021)

update - I've resolved the Location Research need and done some work on Needs Style Review & Needs Sources... I also added Needs Relationship Review (although I've done some work on that also now).

Added the maintenance categories Needs Location Research (Lunenburg & Henrico are both counties) & Needs Style Review (at a glance, headings need correction - see Help:Biographies).

Given the presence of two families by the same name, seems wise to project-protect this profile so care is taken when making changes. For that to happen, we need one of the profile managers to add wikitreesoutherncolonies

@ googlegroups . com (without spaces) as a co-profile manager. Once this is done, I'll ask a project Leader to add PPP. Thanks!

Thanks Jillaine! I've added PPP & PA (and also changed the project sticker back to a project box).

Puckett-2113 and Puckett-171 appear to represent the same person because: Same person, same wife

Puckett-171 and Puckett-202 appear to represent the same person because: Puckett-171 and Puckett-202 are most likely the same person and one has no manager. Please merge to continue and/or omit a possible relation between the two. I can adopt and reword the unmanaged one if you like.
posted by Edna (Niblett) Wood
I did the merge. I just moved everything into the areas so that there wasn't two "Biography". There was some duplicate stuff but I didn't want to delete anything. I will leave that up to you.

Puckett-183 and Puckett-171 appear to represent the same person because: Too many similarities to be coincidental.
