Elizabeth Gilbert Puckey was born on November 27, 1809 to William Puckey and Marjery Gilbert. Her parents died in Sydney, Australia in 1827.
She was Baptised on 15 April 1810 at the New Street Independent Church, Penryn, Cornwall, England. [1]
When Elizabeth was a child her parents and her only brother William Gilbert Puckey emigrated to Australia and settled at Paramatta. In 1819 they moved to Kerikeri Bay of Islands, New Zealand. Her father was engaged by the Rev Samuel Marsden to teach the Maori useful arts. He was a builder and assisted in building the Kemps house.
Elizabeth and her parents returned to Australia, making their home in Sydney. Elizabeth was possessed of a beautiful soprano voice and became a member of the choir of St James Church. Gilbert Mair heard her singing and fell in love with her. [2]
Elizabeth married Gilbert Mair on the 13 September 1827 at St James' Church, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia by Rev. Hill. [3]
Elizabeth had 12 children between 1828 and 1852
She died November 12 1870 at her home, called "Deveron" in Whangarei. [4]
She was buried at the Christ Church Anglican Cemetery,Kamo, Whangarei.[5]
