Biography

European Aristocracy
Rev Richard Puleston was a member of the aristocracy in British Isles.

Richard Puleston (b. 1548?) was born at Allington, Denbighshire, the fourth son of Sir Roger Puleston of Emral (d. 1587). [1] [2]

He attended Oxford and was a clergyman at Kingsworthy, Hants from 1596, he also held the sinecure rectories of Llaneugrad, Anglesey, 1592-6, and Hope, Flintshire, from 1597, and prior to that he held the rectory of Astbury, Ches. since 1577. [3]

Richard married Alice, daughter of David Lewis of Burcot, Oxfordshire and had a son, John (c.1583 - 1659 who was a Welsh barrister and Judge. [4] [2]

His son was Sir Roger Puleston, Judge of the Common Pleas who died in 1659. [2]

Research Notes

1548 seems too young - B.A. 16 Dec., 1573, M.A. 30 March, 1577; one of these names student of Inner Temple 1571, as of Alington, co. Denbigh, gent. (younger son of Roger, of Emral, Flints), rector of Astbury, Cheshire, 1577, of Llanegrad, Anglesey, 1593, of Kingsworthy, Hants, 1596, of Eastyn or Queenhope, Flints, 1597. See Foster's Inns of Court Reg. [5]

Discussion regarding parents

The evidence regarding the parents of Richard is conflicting. However he does appear to belong to the Puleston family of Emral, Flintshire. On balance, it seems most likely that he is one of the sons of Roger Puleston who died in 1571, and Roger's wife Anna, daughter of Richard Grosvenor.

Sources for the parents of Richard Puleston: The Alumni Oxonienses states that Richard was the younger son of Roger of Emral, Flints. but there is nothing specific about which Roger that is. [5]

The Biography of Wales source names his father as Roger Puleston (d.1587). [1] The Roger Puleston who died in 1587 was born about 1542. It is difficult to see how this can be the correct father as there are suffficent supporting sources to confirm the two men were contemporaries rather than father and son. The Biography of Wales source specifically names the father is 'Sir Roger Puleston', but I haven't been able to find any evidence that Roger Puleston (d 1587) was knighted.

According to the 'Annals and Antiquities of the Counties and County Families of Wales' source [2] Richard is the son of Sir Richard Puleston (c. 1480) and his wife Ermin Hamner (ie the grandfather of Roger who died in 1587). This is the only source that I can find that states that Richard's father is Richard, rather than Roger. It is harder to be confident with dates at this slightly earlier period, but difficult to make the dates fit, especially if Sir Richard only had one wife.

I have found one publication which suggests that Richard is one of seven sons of Roger Puleston (c.1505 -1571) of Emral and his wife Anne Grosvenor (ie the Roger who is currently set as Richard's brother). [6] This hypothesis is credible as far as the dates go, and consistent with the Dictionary of Wales and Alumni Oxon. that the father was Roger rather than Richard. There are no citations provided to support Mrs Cope's research.

Hi Joann, thanks for proposing the merge of this profile with Puleston-19! Please get back to me if you have any thoughts about the parents, as explained on the research notes on Puleston-19. Happy to discuss. Regards Gillian.

Hi Bill and Donald, I was wondering if you have had a chance to consider the parents of this Richard b abt 1548? I'm more than happy to discuss. If I don't hear from you, I'll amend his parents to Roger d 1571 and his wife Anne Grosvenor, with a research notes section covering the discrepancy in sources regarding his parents. Many thanks Gillian

Hi Joann, please see notes on Richard Puleston regarding the parents of Richard b abt 1548. Please could you get back to me asap if you have any comments after reviewing the sources, as it would be preferable to clarify the parents before reproposing the merge of this profile with Puleston-19. Thanks, Gillian

Hi Bill and Donald, I've added a section under research notes regarding the parents/father of Richard for your review. I think it is clear that he is not the son of Richard and Ermin (ie the parents he is currently connected to. It seems most likely that he is the son of Roger Puleston d. 1571, but I've gone as far as I can with internet research only. I'll repropose the merges now. Many thanks. Gillian

Hi Joann, I'm letting you know that the sources relevant to Richard Puleston who married Alice appear to be inconsistent - see Richard Puleston which is a duplicate of this profile, for more information.

Hi Bill and Donald, I'm going through this line and notice that according to the Alumni Oxon., this Richard is the son of Sir Roger Puleston, not Sir Richard Puleston. Thanks for rejecting the merge I proposed previously. I'll work on all the profiles some more!

Puleston-85 and Puleston-19 do not represent the same person because: Puleston85 has wrong dates. Born when his mother was 90 years old?

Puleston-85 and Puleston-19 appear to represent the same person because: Same parents, same wife, same son. Both dates of birth are estimates, but 1548 is preferable. Mother's estimated date of birth may also need to be reviewed. Thanks for looking at these potential duplicates.

This tree is confusing - you were at the wrong point in the tree. I proposed some merges to fix this.

If this Richard Puleston definitely is the son of Roger Puleston and Jane Hanmer, then his wife is NOT Alice Lewis, but Ermin Hanmer. His first son was Roger and his second son Richard. His son Richard was married to Alice Lewis. I have created the profile for Ermin Hanmer, his wife. It makes all sorts of faults when I try to connect the profiles in marriage. Could you look into this please ? The Puleston lineage can be found here: https://books.google.co.uk/books?id=iD4LAAAAYAAJ&printsec=frontcover&source=gbs_ge_summary_r&cad=0#v=onepage&q=Hanmer&f=false page 455. Richard is toward the end of the page.
