Biography

Samuel Pullen was baptised on 21st January 1781at St John the Baptist's Church, Kirdford, Sussex, the son of Samuel and Mary Pullen. Sadly his father had died a few months before his baptism.

First Marriage

Samuel Pullen (age 18) and Sarah Heather (age 25), both of this parish, were married on 21st November 1799 at St John the Baptist's Church, Kirdford, Sussex. He signed the register with 'X'. Their witnesses were William Heather and Sarah Heather (who both signed 'X').

Samuel and Sarah quickly went on to have seven children who were all baptised at St John the Baptist's Church, Kirdford, Sussex: Sarah 20th April 1800 (just five months after the marriage), Samuel 1802, Elizabeth 1805, Mary 1808, William 1810, James 1813, and Edward 1816.

Samuels wife died in 1824: Sarah Pullen, age 50, was buried on 31st August 1824 at St John the Baptist's Church, Kirdford, Sussex.

Second Marriage

Samuel Pullen then had a relationship with Mary Ford (nee Boxall). It is uncertain whether Mary's husband Richard Ford was still around at this time.

Samuel and Mary had three children: Jane Ford baptised 1826 at Northchapel (described as the 'illegitimate daughter of Mary Ford of Kirdford'), Eliza Ford baptised 1828 at Goring (described as the daughter of 'Mary Ford, widow'. Eliza's father was later named as Samuel Pullen when she married in 1853), and Robert Ford baptised 1831 at East Preston (described as the son of 'Mary Ford of Preston Workhouse'.)

On the very same day that their last child was baptised Samuel and Mary married: Samuel Pullen, widower of Kirdford, and Mary Ford, widow of Goring, were married by licence on 31st June 1831 at St Mary the Virgin's Church, East Preston, Sussex. Both signed the register with 'X'. Their witnesses were Mary Kent and James Float (he signed 'X'.

Sadly Samuel died the following year: Samuel Pullen was buried, age 51, on 19th December 1832 at St John the Baptist's Church, Kirdford, Sussex.
