Biography

Thomas James was born in 1824 in Poole, Dorset, England and is the son of Thomas Punch and Sarah Ann (Brown). He was baptised on September 30, 1825 in St. James', Poole, Dorset, England (FHL Film number 1239221, Ref. ID Item 16)[1]

He married Catherine (Lock) after posting Banns on May 25, 1846 in St. Leonard, Shoreditch, London England. Thomas was a Shipwright while Catherine was a dressmaker who could not write so signed her mark (x). Both their fathers were shipwright. Thomas and Catherine listed their residence at time of marriage as 13 George Street.[3]

By the time of the 1851 England Census Thomas and Catherine had buried 3 children.

Thomas and his family (Catherine 33, Louisa 6 and Henry 1) immigrated from England to Australia, as assisted immigrants, aboard the "Light of the Age" arriving on October 4, 1857.[5]

Catherine died in 1877 and he remarried in 1878 to Dorothy (Cottam) Wilkinson in Victoria[6][7]

He died in 1887 aged 62 in Kerang, Victoria[8]

Probate of his estate was granted to his widow, Dorothy and his son, William Punch, a dairyman of Kerang.[9]
