Flag of Suffolk (adopted 2017)
Dorothy Punchard was born in Rattlesden, Suffolk, England.

Dorothy was born on 6 June 1897 and baptised at Rattlesden Parish Church on 25 July 1897. She was the illegitimate daughter of Caroline Punchard and butcher Thomas Portus.[1][2]

Lucy was recorded in the 1901 Census in Rattlesden, 'boarding' in the household of Lucy Cocksedge. The head's daughter, also named Lucy, was recorded as a nurse (domestic) so was likely looking after 3-year-old Dorothy. Her mother, Caroline, seems to have been working as a servant in Ipswich at the time.[3]

Name Relation Status Sex Age Occupation Birth Place
Lucy Cocksedge Head Widowed F 66 Rattlesden, Suffolk, England
Lucy Cocksedge Daughter Single F 25 Nurse (domestic) Rattlesden, Suffolk, England
Dorothy Punchard Boarder F 3 Rattlesden, Suffolk, England

Lucy attended Onehouse Voluntary Primary School for a short time in 1903. Her mother's name was recorded, but Lucy's address was given as Stow Union House which indicates she still may not have been in her mother's care. She was admitted to the school on 4 May 1903, and her last date of attendance was 22 May 1903. The reason for leaving the school was given as 'Left Stow Union'.[4]

Dorothy appears to have been sent to Canada as a 'Home Child' with the Barnado Homes organisation at the age of 12. She left London for Montreal, Quebec aboard the Sicilian on 10 July 1909.[5][6][7]

In the 1911 Canada census, 13-year-old Dorothy was recorded in the house of Freeborn Carscadden (and his sister jane Carscadden). She was working as a domestic servant.[8]

She married George Frederick Denny on 8 February 1917 at Oshawa, Ontario.[9][10]

Dorothy died in 1991. She was buried at the Oshawa Union Cemetery in Oshawa, Ontario.[11]

Research Notes

  • birth date given on Onehouse School admissions as 6 June 1898
  • birth place given as Wiltshire on marriage record but she may not have known this information. Her father was given as "— Punchard" and written in the mother's name section is: "left old country when a child and has no relations here"

Profile History
Dorothy was originally uploaded as a child of Charles Punchard and Mary Ann Steggles. This was due to a mistake made prior to upload.

Baptism record gives parents as Caroline (Punchard) Steggles (1872-) and Thomas Portus (abt.1875-) and so was detached from Charles Punchard (1869-1950) and Mary Ann Steggles (abt.1872-abt.1956). Dorothy's mother seems to be Charles' sister Caroline (Punchard) Steggles (1872-). This may have had something to do with the confusion. Also see notes in Thomas Portus' profile.

Thank you for your comment - I believe you are correct. She was last recorded in Suffolk in 1903 (aged about 6) so it's possible she spent time in Wiltshire before 1909, and being so young presumed she was born there. It would be very interesting to see her 'Barnado records'.

I think that Dorothy emigrated to Canada in 1909 aged 12. if I am correct she married George Frederick Denny / Denney on 8 Feb 1917 in Oshawa, Durham, Ontario, Canada. but there is a problem in that Dorothy does not name her parents and is entered as being born in Wiltshire, England [There is not a Dorothy punchcard entered as being born in Wiltshire which would account for her being born there between 1895 and 1899]. I found the death in 1991 in Oshawa; she was said to have been born in 1897, which of course the correct year [findagrave has a picture of the placque] all the Canadian records are on familysearch

it should also be known that George made a mistake too. firstly his father was George Henry Denny or Denney and his mother's name was Henrietta Elizabeth Bird who married in 1888 in Dedham, Essex, England. George Frederick was baptised on 12 Jul 1891 in Dedham, Essex, England and died in 1951 in Oshawa
