Biography

Alfred Purcell, son of George Purcell and Margaret Randolph (Purcell), was born near Maysville, Mason County, Kentucky, in July of 1803(4). He married (1) Mary (Polly) Hill on 13 March 1825, in Champaign County, Ohio. Mary was born 19 November 1804 and died 10 December 1838; she was the daughter of Joseph Hill.

After Mary's death, Alfred moved to Muscatine County, Iowa, in 1840, with other family members. He married Elizabeth D. Parvin there, on 22 December 1840. She was born 21 January 1821 near Cincinnatti, Hamilton Cty., Ohio, daughter of William Parvin and Hannah Westcott, both natives of Cumberland Cty., New Jersey.

Alfred was listed as a plasterer in the early censuses; later a farmer. He died 16 December 1878 at Muscatine, and is buried in Greenwood Cemetery in Muscatine. Elizabeth was believed to be the oldest living resident of Muscatine at the time of her death, 2 March 1914, in Muscatine. She is also buried in Greenwood Cemetery. The grave sites for Alfred and Elizabeth are adjacent to the grave sites of Elizabeth's parents, William and Hannah Parvin.[1]
