Martin was born about 1820. Martin Purcell was a Fencible and arrived in Auckland with Wife Bridget and 2 Children and an infant. Left Tilbury 14 April 1847 and arrived Auckand 5 August 1947 aboard the Ramillies which was the first detachment of Fencibles who settled Onehunga No land and no houses had been built so the troops and famillies were kept on the Ramillies for 2 months while barracks were built in Onehunga. The troops worked on the roads to provide a link between the Manukau and Waitemata. Martin Purcell died in 1885.
