George PURCELL was born in about 1827 in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, England [1]. He was baptised there on the 18 December 1827. His parents were John and Ann PURCELL. John was a shop keeper. [2] Ann's maiden name could be CARROLL according to a marriage record for a John PURCELL and Ann CARROLL in St Mary's (Pro-Cathedral), Dublin City, Dublin, Ireland on the 8 February 1812. Marriage
George married Harriet LARN nee SEWELL, after banns, in 1856. The marriage took place in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, England. George's surname in the marriage notice was POSTLE. George was a house keeper and a bachelor. Harriet was a widow living with a Mr. POSTLE. The couple were of full age and lived in Market Gates, Great Yarmouth. [4] The banns of marriage were read on the 30 December 1855, 6 January 1856 and 13 January 1856. [5]

George's brother, William PURCELL or POSTLE, married Harriet SEWELL's sister-in-law, Mary Ann LARN. Harriet's first husband was Mary Ann's brother, James LARN.
Married Life
In 1861, George, 33, lived with his wife, Harriet, 35, at 8 Row 5, Northern Great Yarmouth. George was an agricultural labourer. He was born in Great Yarmouth and Harriet was born in Flegg Burgh, Norfolk. She was an agricultural labourer's wife. There were three children in the household. George, 5, Harriett, 8 and Caroline, 1. George and Harriett were scholars. All of the children were born in Great Yarmouth. The family surname was spelt 'POSTLE'. [1]
Last Years
George passed away on the 27 October 1912 in Adelaide, South Australia, Australia. He was 84. [7]
Research Notes
The death notice is believed to be the correct one because there is evidence that George PURCELL's parents, John PURCELL and Ann spent time in Australia. John was a soldier. He was born in Ireland, but lived in Great Yarmouth according to a military record for him.
George's brother, William PURCELL or POSTLE, married Harriet SEWELL's sister-in-law, Mary Ann LARN. William was born in New South Wales, Australia.
