BURNEL SYBIL Sister of Robert Burnel, married of Ralph II Purcel

[NOTE - Robert and Sybil Burnel may have been the son and daughter of Henry Burnel who first appears in the Pipe Rolls 23HII, [1177] page 194, when was debited 8 marks for forestry fine in Surrey. Henry was still being debited with 103 shillings and 8 pence for the same fine in 1187, only having paid in total 8 shillings in the preceding years. Until such time that I can access the Pipe Rolls for the reigns of Richard and John at the University I cannot confirm or dismiss this. If Robert was the son of Henry Burnel, Robert would appear in the Pipe Roll of the following reigns being debited for the same forestry fine. Robert Purcel named a younger son, Henry.]

PURCEL HENRY Younger son of Robert Robert and Unknown, brother of Otwel I Purel

[Staffordshire V4, page 107] Pleas and Assize at Stafford May 1247. Oxford. A jury by consent of the parties came to make recognition if Thomas de St. Walery (Sancto Walerico) when he gave the Abbot of Oseney the homage and service of ROBERT PURCELL and his heirs for two hides of land in Newenton, was seised as of fee of 24s. annual rent besides the service of half a knight's fee, so that Robert Purcel during his lifetime always performed that service to the Abbot, and likewise HENRY PURCELL HIS SON or whether the said Thomas when he made the feoffment to the Abbot was only seised of the said 24s. of rent and of the service of holding the stirrup of the said Thomas when he went backwards and forwards to the King's Court, and of expediting the business of the said Thomas at the same Court, OTOVIC PURCEL averred. The jury state that Thomas de St. Valery was in seisin both of the half knight's fee and the annual rent in question, when he made the feoffment to the Abbot; and Otovic Purcel is therefore in misericordia. [Footnote - Robert Purcel, living during reign of John. He had, it appears, enfeoffed a younger son, Henry, at Newington.]
