Biography

Sarah (Purchase) Phippen immigrated to New England as a child during the Puritan Great Migration (1621-1640).

Sarah Purchase was baptized at Holy Trinity, Dorchester, England on August 6, 1626, daughter of Aquila Purchase and Anne Squire. Her family came to New England in 1633, but her father died on the passage. [1]

Sarah married Gamaliel Phippen by 1649, as their eldest child was born in December of that year. Gamaliel Phippen was born about 1624, son of David and Sarah (___) Phippen of Weymouth, Dorset, England. His father David sailed to New England on the Recovery in March 1634, and was admitted a freeman Hingham, Massachusetts in March, 1635/6. The family was of Boston in 1641. [2] [3]

Sarah's mother Anne remarried to Thomas Oliver, and in his estate inventory was included L30 in the hands of Sampson Shore and Gamaliel Phippen, her sons-in-law. [1]

Gamaliel died at Boston, Massachusetts about 1671/2, as on July 4, 1672 his widow Sarah purchased a warehouse from Robert Haughton. [3]

Sarah died at Boston about January 17, 1682/3. Her gravestone was discovered in an excavation of Eliot Street in Carlton, where her inscription reads: Here lyeth buried ye body of Sarah Phippen ye wife of Gamaliel Phippen, aged 55 years, died January ye 17, ___. [4]

On December 12, 1683, Joseph Bridgham and William Gibson were granted administration of the estate of Sarah Phippen, widow of Gamaliel Phippen. [5]

Question about the father of Sarah Purchase: Just saw in Passenger and Immigration Lists Index Richard Purchase as the father and Aquila Purchase as another child of his. Has this been rejected?

There's an error on that Ancestry file. One source cited in the bibligraphy, Anderson's Great Migration Begins (pages 1527-8) names Acquilla (not Richard) Purchase as the husband of Anne Squire and father of Sarah, who married Gamaliel Phippen. Philby's Passenger lists might be consulted separately, but it seems like a mistake.
