When 18 years old (1821), in his home town of Sevenoaks, Edward had enlisted in the King's Own Regiment. His regiment, the 4th, came to NSW in 1832 and was stationed at the Castle Hill Barracks. In 1835, when the regiment was ordered to India, Edward purchased his discharge. Edward and his wife Eliza had two children by that year and they settled on a property of 20-30 cres on Old Castle Hill Road. Edward built a house, which was enlarged over the years, planted an orchard on 100 orange trees, which did very well and enlarged his orchard plantings further. He also began a tannery and made boots and harnesses and this busines together with the successful orchard brought in a good income.
