She was born in Woodstock, NB, eldest child of the late Gordon and Gertrude (Reddal) Purvis. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Gartley and her brothers, Frank and Arnold. Irene was the cherished mother of one son, Gordon (Jean) of Ottawa, and two daughters, Wanda MacLean and Diane Fraser (Doug) of Fredericton; beloved grandchildren to Misty Thomas (Joel) of Saint John, John Clarke (Theresa) of Edmonton, Dana Jo Brownell, (Paul) of Fredericton, David Clarke of Ottawa, Erica, Currie-Fraser, of Chapel Hill, NC, Brittany and Tyler Fraser of Fredericton; and much loved G.G. to great grandchildren, Cassandra and Jarrod Thomas of Saint John. Irene is also survived by two sisters, Edith Gibson of Woodstock and Bernice Cail of Fredericton, and one brother, Edison Purvis (Jane) of Woodstock, and several nieces and nephews. Irene was a devoted mother and grandmother, and was an active member of the Gibson Memorial United Church and the UCW for over 56 years. A past Matron and member of the Devon Chapter # 37, Order of the Eastern Star, and an honorary member of Celestial Chapter #3, OES, and was a past Grand Officer. She loved to play bridge and was a member of the Hillcrest Bridge Club. She also was an avid fisherwoman in her earlier years and would often be seen landing a big salmon on the Miramichi while Gartley looked on. A celebration of Irene's life will begin with visitation at Bishop's Funeral Home, 540 Woodstock Road, on Wednesday, October 15th from 7-8 p.m. The memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. from the Gibson Memorial United Church with Rev. Boyd Vincent officiating. Interment to be held at a later date. A reception will follow in the church hall.
