Sallie was born to parents who were both born in Virginia; she was also born in Virginia, in December, 1828. Her father was Thomas B. Puryear.[1][2]
On July 27, 1852, in Mecklenburg County, Virginia, Sallie and "Hiram Forlines" were licensed to be married. They were married on July 29, 1852, as attested by "Rv. Burton," in Redoakgrove, Charlotte County, Virginia, on August 10, 1852.[3]
During the U.S. Census of 1880, in the Bluestone District of Mecklenburg County, Virginia, "Sarah Forline," at age 50 (born circa 1830), was found living with her son-in-law. Her husband is not listed.[4]
During the U.S. Census of 1900, she was found living, at age 71, with her son-in-law, in the Bluestone District of Mecklenburg County, Virginia. She had been married perhaps 48 years, and bore four children, three of whom were still alive in 1900.[5]
During the U.S. Census of 1900, in the column corresponding to the "Number of years [a woman was] married," "48" was placed by Sallie's name, but had a line drawn through it. Perhaps she had been married a total of 48 years, or, perhaps, she was married 48 years prior (circa 1852). She was 72 at the time, so either possibility is feasible. She is listed as the mother-in-law, but no father-in-law is mentioned, so he had probably died prior to 1900.
