George W. Puryear was born to Thornton and Elizabeth Puryear about 1836 in Halifax, Virginia, middle child of five. The 1850 census of Mecklenburg, Virginia showed his mother Elizabeth with daughters Mary and Martha.
On November 18, 1858, sister Mary E. Puryear married James M. Epperson.
On May 23, 1861 George enlisted in the CSA and would be in the 2nd Virginia Cavalry, Company I. Brother-in-law James M. Epperson would be in the same unit. James died during the war (date to be discovered), and in the 1870 census Staunton, Halifax, sister Mary (1829) and her son William T. Epperson (1860) were living in George's home. Another sister Emily (1834) was living with them.
On February 17, 1875 George would marry Ellen L Epperson, the sister of his late brother-in-law James M. Epperson. In that record, parents Thornton and Elizabeth are named. George would give one of his sons the middle name Thornton.
Ellen's Findagrave page would give her lifespan of July 12, 1848 - Feb. 7, 1923. Birth records and marriage records, and the 1900 census for Halifax combine to show George and Ellen had the following children:
Ellen's Findagrave doesn't have links to children, but George, Rosa, and Richard are at the same cemetery, Kedron Baptist in Gladys, Campbell County, Virginia.
George W. Puryear is not shown in the 1900 record, and Ellen is listed as widowed. He is not buried at Kedron Baptist, and no record found for death or on Findagrave, so can only say it was between 1889-1899.
