Biography

JACOB I. PUTERBAUGH was born 1757 in Fredrick Co., Maryland. Son of George Puterbaugh and Christina Adam. He married Susannah Ulrich (1759-1830), daughter of Stephen Waggoner Ullery and Elizabeth Cripe, in 1782. They had 12 children: John; Abraham; Elizabeth (1786-1866); Catharine (died during infancy); Jacob; Catharine; George; Susannah; Mary (died during infancy); Mary; and David. Around 1784 the Puterbaugh group moved out of Maryland to Franklin County, Pennsylvania, and Jacob and his brother George (who also married an Ullery daughter) had moved to Bedford County, Pennsylvania. In 1784 they made an application to receive land. He was appointed as Justice of the Peace in Woodberry Township in 1791. By 1795 he purchased 63 acres, called “Hempfield” in Woodberry Township. In 1798 he purchased 276 acres from his brother George and another neighbor. He was noted still living in Bedford County, Pennsylvania in 1810, and then sometime after that had moved west to German Township (now named Liberty), Darke Co., Ohio. His children John, Abraham, and Mary also moved nearby in Harrison Township. In 1822 he sold his land in Bedford County to son-in-law Johnathan Hoover. He died 1822 in Darke Co., Ohio. Susannah moved back to Bedford County after his passing and she died in Bedford Co., Pennsylvania in 1830. She is apparently buried in a lone grave about 500 yards west of Stonerock Cemetery near a clump of trees.
