Interview

Charlie was interviewed sometime in May 1936 in Columbus, Georgia as part of the Federal Writer's Project of the Works Progress Administration (WPA). The results are presented in narrative form, most, allegedly, in the first person, and made available by the Library of Congress.[1]

When asked about whippings Charlie stated - My mother resented being whipped and would run away to the woods and often remained as long as twelve months at a time, Then the strain of staying away from her family became too great, she would return home. No sooner would she arrive than the old overseer would tie her to a peach tree and whip her again.

The total interview can be read here 188.
