Biography

Mary Thomas was the daughter of Ralph Pyle and his wife Sarah Smith. This is proved by her will that mentions her brother, William Pyle.

Abstract of Will

I Mary Thomas of Harford County . . .

  • to my daughter Betty Thomas one pair of bedsteads, one feather bed, one double coverlet that is black, blue and red, one white, one diaper table cloth, one large walnut table, one white spotted cow, two sheep, one iron pot that was part of her grandmother’s estate and six new pewter plates which was her sister, Sarah’s, and a new pewter dish of her own choosing out of my furniture and one callico bed quilt.
  • to my daughter, Jean Ward one bed and furniture and one walnut table which she has now in her possession, also a small tan and white heifer to her oldest son, John Ward and also two sheep to her second son, William Ward.
  • to my daughter, Hannah Thomas one pair of bedsteads that I bought of Barnet Johnson, one feather bed which I commonly lie on, one double coverlet that is blue and white all wool, done diaper table cloth and one poplar chest, the second largest dinig table and a tea table, said poplar chest and said tables being part of her father’s estate and in case Hannah should not get said chest and said tables she is to have the worth of them out of the residue of my estate and also one small walnut table which was part of her grandmother’s estate and one young black and white cow, two sheep and half a dozen deep new pewter plates and pewter dishes, the second choice and one callico quilt for a bed.
  • to my son James Thomas a young sorrell mare, one feather bed and double coverlet that is blue and white and fifty pounds current money to be paid to him at the age of twenty one years out of the money that is coming to me of my brother’s estate, now in the hands of my brother, William Pyle with such interest as the law allows the said William Pyle to pay and one callico bed quilt.
  • to my son Ralph Thomas, one feather bed the tick new that is patched and one double coverlet that is black, white and red and all the estate left to me by his father till my son William arrives to the age of sixteen years. In case my son William departs this life before he arrives to sixteen years of age then till my second youngest son arrives to sixteen years of age and that my two youngest sons shall be bound to some handicraft as soon as they shall arrive to the age of fifteen years and in case they should not be inclined to go to a trade that my son Ralph, must give them reasonable schooling out of the profits of said estate and that all my children that is not married shall be kept and raised on the profits and interest of said estate untill the above period as may be and that my son James shall have six months schooling out of the aforementioned profits and any of them should be married before the time my son William or the next youngest son arrives to the age of sixteen as the case may be then my son Ralph is not to suppport the married one or married ones.
  • I give to my two youngest sons, John Thomas and William Thomas all the remaining part of what is coming to me of my mother’s estate except what was coming to me of my mother’s estate except what was coming to her by means of William Pyles estate in the West Indies.
  • to my seven children to with: Ralph, Jean, Betty, James, Hannah, John & William all the rest residue and remainder of my personal estate to be equally divided amongst them.
  • I do appoint my son Ralph executor of this my last will 18 AUG 1805. Witnesses: Jehu Smith & Eli Smith. Presented to court 5 NOV 1805.[1]
