Harvey Pyles was born on 23 November 1892 in Decatur, Texas to Jonathan Monroe Pyles and Virginia Lee Drinkard. He married Molly Fern Archer on 20 March 1910 at the age of 17; they had 4 children together. Walter and Fern eventually divorced, and he married Lorenza Garza on 4 August 1940 at the age of 47. They adopted daughter together and are listed as her parents on the Texas Birth Index. Harvey died on 13 August 1945 in Pharr, Texas from coronary thrombosis; it was his daughter's first birthday. The location of his burial is unknown, though it has been verified that he is not in the same cemetery in Pharr as his wife and daughter.
1917-1918: Walter Harve Pyles is married and living in Menard, Texas. He claims an exemption from the draft on account of having a dependent child. He is working as a laborer on a farm. He is described as tall with a medium build and has blue eyes and brown hair.
27 April 1942: Walter Harve Pyles is married and living in Pharr, Texas with his wife (Lorenza). He is 51 years old and self-employed. He is 5' 10 and 3/4", weighs 163 lbs. and has blue eyes, brown hair, and a light complexion.
United States Census History
1910: Harvey Pyles is enumerated in a household in Justice Precinct 6, Comanche, Texas with his parents and siblings; his wife also lives in the household. He is 18 years old and has been married for less than one year. He earns wages as a farm laborer. Although he did not attend school, he is able to read and write.
1920: Harvey Pyles is enumerated in a household in Eden, Texas along with his wife, Fern, and son, Herchel; he is 27 years old. The family rents the house, and Harvey works as a laborer. He is able to read and write.
1930: Walter H Pyles is enumerated as head of household in Abernathy, Hale, Texas where he lives with his wife and four children. The family rents the home and does not own a radio. He works in auto repair as a machinist. He did not attend school but can read and write. According to the Census, he first married at the age of 20 (this is a discrepancy in the records).
PHARR - Harvey Pyles, about 55, died here Monday at 3 p.m. after a brief illness. He had lived in the Valley several years and is survived by his wife and an adopted child. He was formerly a driver for the Valley Airfield Bus Co.
Pyles became ill Saturday and was visited by two brothers and a sister, J. M. and Bill Pyles and Mrs. Ratha Nebbet of Eden, who left for their homes four hours before their brother's death.
Attempts were being made through the state highway patrol to locate the brothers and sister. Funeral arrangements were postponed until they could be reached.
