Biography

In the absence of records, John Pinney's birth year is estimated as 1595. He was the son of John Pinney (1551-1632) and his wife Johanna. By occupation, he was a draper.

John Pinn(e)y married Protesia Holdich in Exeter, Devon, England, in 1620[1] or on 5 January 1620/21.[2]

The will of John Pynney of the city and county of Exon, drap, was written on 25 May 1637 and proved in Exeter, Devon, on 19 July 1639 by his widow, identified as "Parthesy Pynney", who served as executrix. In his will he provided 3 s., 4 d. each, to the parish churches of Brodway, Hardington, and St. Pedrox in Exon (i.e., Broadway, Somerset; Hardington Mandeville, Somerset; and St. Petrock, Exeter).[3]

In the will, he mentioned his seven children:

  1. John
  2. Ed
  3. Elli
  4. Sara
  5. Hester
  6. Susan
  7. Prudence

He mentioned "their uncle Edmond Pynney's legacy being included in" their inheritances.

Research Notes

John Pinney and his wife Protesia have been identified as the parents of Sarah (Pinney) Poole, but it is more likely that Sarah was a daughter of John Pinney's brother Nicholas.[4]

As currently written, profiles Pinney-22 and Pynney-1 both represent the John Pinney, draper of Exeter, who was married to Protesia Parthesy Holdich, and who made his will in 1637 and died before July 1639. However, the two profiles currently have different parents. Pinney-22 is connected to John Pinney (1551-1632) (and wife Johanna Unknown) and Pynney-1 is connected to John Pinney (1558-1629) (and wife Joanna Sherwin).

Both of these claimed fathers left wills. John Pinney (1551-1632) named numerous children, including a son John, in his will. The will of John Pinney (1558-1629) gives no indication of any living sons (he does mention a daughter, and some other relatives were named as heirs). Based on this information, I will merge these profiles, keeping John Pinney (1551-1632) and wife Johanna Unknown as this man's parents.

Pynney-1 and Pinney-133 do not represent the same person because: These are different people, based on the birthdates. The wives and children need to be reassigned to the correct people. See https://books.google.com/books?id=VBJAAAAAYAAJ&pg=PA41 for some information about them.
