Biography

John was born on 25 Jul 1833 in Wintersdorf, Sachsen-Altenburg, Thüringen, Deutschland. [1]

When he was about 20 years old, he came to America and lived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania for about 2 years before moving to Linn County, Iowa in 1855,[2] where he married Wilhelmina "Minnie" Krieger on 17 Apr 1859.[3] In Jun 1860 when the census was enumerated, John and Minnie were living in Benton County, Iowa. John is using the name "Gottliebe," but it's difficult to read on the census listing and has been indexed as "Goddleup Vuass" at FamilySearch. They have a son listed with the name John who was born in Jan 1860. He is listed as "Alfred" on subsequent censuses.[4] In total, they had three children together -- Alfred, Edward, and Elizabeth -- before Minnie died in 1868. She was only 25 years old and left John with three children under the age of 10.

John remarried ten years later to Caroline Reisland on 23 Aug 1869.[5] They had six children together -- Emma, John, Samuel, Dora, Oma and Frank.[2]

John worked for the railroad until 1875 when he retired to a farm outside of Cedar Rapids.[2] The 1880 Census shows their residence in Clinton, Linn County, Iowa.[6]

Three months before John died, his children and their families surprised him and Caroline with a family reunion at their home. This was reported on 9 Jul 1914 in The Gazette in Cedar Rapids.[7]

John died on 20 Oct 1914.[8]

Research Notes

  • The 1860 Census shows a John Quass, b. ca. 1833 in Saxony who was living in New York in the household of Joseph Huber, also born in Saxony.[9] I don't think this is the same John Quass, but he's the only one born at the same time as Johann Gottlieb Quass who shows up in the 1860 Census. I'm also not able to find Minnie or Albert in the 1860 Census. -- Fiscus-32 02:17, 31 March 2021 (UTC)
  • John and Caroline had six children: Emma, John, Samuel, Dora, Oma and Frank.[2]
  • John was listed in the Cedar Rapids city directory in 1901 living at "800 F av w." Listed at the same address were Frank V. and John W. Quass.[10]
