Mary was the second daughter of John Quattlebaum and Elizabeth Youngblood Quattlebaum. She was born in about 1834 in Edgefield County, South Carolina.
In the 1840 U. S. Census [1] Mary would have been the daughter under five years old. She had an older sister, Sarah, and two younger brothers, George and James.
In the 1850 U. S. Census (15 August 1850) [2] Mary was sixteen years old and and her brother James was ten. They were both attending school. Her sister had married and lived in the next household. Her brother Benjamin had died soon after the 1840 census.
Mary married William Watkins on February 12, 1854 in Edgefield County, South Carolina. [3]
On 8 October 1857 Mary's father signed a will that included Mary and William Walton. It included: 5th I give to my beloved daughter, Mary Watkins, one female slave Ann, assessed at six hundred ($600) dollars; one Pianno Forte assessed at two hundred and forty ($240) dollars, all of which they now have in their lawful possession. and 7th I hereby nominate and appoint my son-in-law William Watkins and my son James A. Quattlebaum Executors to this my last Will.[4] The statement all of which they now have in their lawful possession. seems to indicate that both Sarah and Mary received land when they married.
In the 1860 U. S. Census (14 June 1860) [5] Mary and William's family lived in Saluda District, Edgefield County. William had real estate valued at $8000 and a personal estate of $39,000. They had two sons: J. Belton age 5 and W. Q. age 3.
In the 1870 U. S. Census (8 August 1870) [6] , [7] the family was in Moons, Newberry County. The name was spelled Wadkins. William had real estate valued at $9000 and personal estate of $2000. Mary was thirty-five years old and keeping house. She had seven children: John B. age 15, William Q. age 14, James F. age 9,Martha A. age 5, Cornelia E. age 6, Sarah age 2, Bennie B. age 2 months. The five oldest children were attending school.
The U. S. Census (26 June 1880) [8] shows the family still in Moons. William was still farming. The children remaining at home included: James F. age 19; Permelia E. age 17; Martha A. age 14; Sarah A. age 12; Bennie B. age 10; Walton, age 7; and Mary P. age 4.
Mary's exact birth and death dates have not been sourced. Based of census records her birth would have been about 1834. The place of her birth is inferred by the fact that her parents never lived in any location other than Edgefield County, South Carolina. There is a Find A Grave memorial [9] in Watkins Cemetery in Newberry County, SC that doesn't include a photo or death information. I assume they must think the grave was unmarked but in the same location as the burial of her husband who does have a marker. The cemetery is reportedly not maintained and in disrepair. The last record I have found was the 1880. More information is needed.
