Biography

Her known alias are: Josette Dubois Suzette Dubony Josette Cornoyer Rosette (could also be a transcription error) Jeffers Rosette Dubois Rosa Josette Quenelle (Channell, Cannell)

Rosette's mother was Angelique Tsihelis or Sauk'so. Sauk'so was of Chinook and Chehalis lineage. Her father was a French Canadian named Abraham Quinelle (Quenelle, Quesnel).

Around 1880, Josette's husband, Edward J. Jeffery (Jeffers), disappeared and left her to care for the children herself. Her son Henry was sent to the Ryan family.

This is story passed on from Edmond Jeffries on William Henry Jeffries (Jeffers): From an old Indian Woman named Sonna who knew John Quenelle when the Tillamook Tribe was ruled by Chief Kelchard (Kelsey) and also from Pete Belique.

John Quenelle (Abraham Quinelle) was full blood Tillamook Indian, married Sofia Cornoyer (Sauk'so), full blood Chinook Indian. John and Sofia had three children, Una, Josette, and Frank Quenelle. Josette Quenelle was born at Grande Ronde, Oregon December 10, 1828. She married John Edward Jeffries June 2nd, 1848, a white man. Josette and John had two sons, John Jr. and William Henry Jeffries.

John Quenelle went one day to find food from the ocean and never returned, leaving Sofia with two little girls and an unborn baby, Frank Quenelle. Una, the oldest girl was later kicked by a horse and died soon after.

After Sofia lost her husband and little girl, she crossed the Columbia River to be near her family and tribe, she caught a cold and died.

John Belique knew Sofia and John Quenelle were from Oregon, so he brought the children back to Oregon to see if someone of the Quenelle family would care for the children but he couldn't find any of the Quenelle family so he and his wife cared for them until they were old enough to care for themselves.

Josette is believed to have lived on the Grande Ronde Reservation until she married John Edward Jeffries, when they bought a home near Hubbard, Oregon. To this marriage were born two sons, John Jr. and William Henry Jeffries. John Edward Jeffries Sr. returned later on to England where he died. Josette later on married Charlie D. Waters. She is believed to have died about 1892, still living near Hubbard Oregon.
