Abraham Roosa Quick was a farmer from Allegheny Township of Potter County, Pennsylvania. His wife was Julia Ann Springer. Seeking a better situation, he moved with his family to East Saginaw by the early 1860s and worked in the lumber mills. He brought seven of his eight children with him, the oldest having taken up an apprenticeship as a blacksmith back home. Aris met, courted, and married Eunice Adelaide Quick, 5th child of Abraham on 20 Jul 1870 in East Saginaw.
Aris and Eunice had five children, three of which reached adulthood. Two daughters were born in East Saginaw and afterwards the family moved westerly to Gowen, Michigan, which lies in Montcalm Township of Montcalm County, right upon the edge of Montcalm and Kent Counties. They stay next to his son-in-law Isaac Dodge who ran a general store in Gowen. Isaac had married Julia Ann Quick, Abraham’s eldest daughter previously in Saginaw, Michigan.
Isaac was also in the lumber business, owning several tracts of timbered land across the county boundary into Spencer Township of Kent County. Another of Abraham’s daughters, Frances Eldora Quick, had been staying with Isaac and Julia and working in the store. Aris and Eunice had their 3rd and 4th children in Gowen.
The first two children, born in East Saginaw, were both girls: Nellie May and Frances M. Nellie died at age 11 at Lincoln Lake in Spencer Township. Frances met and married a local farmer’s son William Emmons. The next two children were boys: Winslow Florella and Alfred, both born in Gowen.
Winslow met and married Ruby Mae Hunt of Greenville, South Carolina and eventually settled in Mecklenburg County of North Carolina and produced a number of children. Alfred remained in Spencer Township, taking over the family farm at Lincoln Lake. He married Vera Harris and they had three children, two of which survived into adulthood. Alfred had a difficult life, leaving the farm, living in Greenville, Michigan, then Turk Lake and eventually Muskegon, Michigan. This path also created four wives and two divorces.
