Biography

From: MRGIFFORD@email.msn.com (John Brandon) Subject: Kinship of Massachusetts immigrants Edward Bromfield and Edmond Hawes Date: 7 Sep 2002 21:47:25 -0700

Several items in the NEHGR demonstrate that the American immigrants Edward Bromfield of Boston and Edmond Hawes of Yarmouth were related. However, their kinship is never explicitly spelled out in the NEHGR (I'm not sure about TAG and other journals or books). The information does not seem to be fully available on the internet, so I'll make a short posting.

Edward1 Bromfield and Edmond1 Hawes were both descendants of Jane (Whitfield) (Porter) Quinby (died circa 1624), wife successively of Richard Porter of Bayham, Sussex, and Edward Quinby of Allington and Titchfield, Hampshire. Edmond Hawes descended from the first marriage, thus ...

Jane Whitfield, married Richard Porter of Bayham, Sussex,

Jane Porter, married Edmond Hawes of Sollihum, Warwickshire,

Edmond1 Hawes, the immigrant.

Edward Bromfield was a descendant of the second marriage, thus ...

Jane Whitfield, married 2) Edward Quinby of Allington/Titchfield, Hampshire,

Lucy Quinby, married Arthur Bromfield,

Henry Bromfield, married Frances Kempe,

Edward1 Bromfield, the immigrant.

Edmond Hawes and Edward Bromfield were thus half first cousins once removed. Like Rev. Henry Whitfield of Guilford, Connecticut, they were colonial descendants of the English Whitfield family. Edward Bromfield has a line of royal descent, which should be covered in Gary Boyd Roberts' _The Royal Descents of 500 mmigrants to the American Colonies or the United States_. (If someone has this book handy and a little time to kill, maybe they could post the line of royal descent down to Edward1 Bromfield.)

NEHGR, 25:182-83: "The sayd Arthur Bromfield had three sons, Henry, Quimby & Arthur & many daughters ..." Also prints the 1618 M.I. of Lucy Quincie [sic], wife of Arthur Bromfield.

NEHGR, 25:329, a pedigree chart of the Bromfield family, showing the grandparents of the immigrant, Edward Bromfield, as Arthur Bromfield, died 1650, and his wife Lucie Quincie [sic], died 1618.

NEHGR, 52:267-68, "The first wife of Arthur Bromfield and apparently the mother of all his children, seems to have been Lucy Quinby, daughter of Edward and Jane Quinby of Allington in Hampshire ..."

NEHGR, 53:12-13, abstract of the will of "Edward Quinbuye of Allington in the county of Southampton, Esquire" (3 Feb. 1612; proved last day of Feb. 1613), mentioning wife Jane Quinbuye, sons-in-law Arthur Brumfeild, Edmond Hawes, John Porter, Richard Porter, and Thomas Porter. Also an abstract of the will of "Jane Quinby of St. Margaret's in the parish of Titchfield, in the county of Southampton, widow of Edward Quinby late of Titchfield deceased Esquire," (6 Aug. 1618; proved 17 June 1624), mentioning sons Arthur Bromfield Esq., Thomas Porter, John Porter, and daughter Jeane Hawes. Henry F. Waters notes, "Any one who will read these two wills of Edward and Jane Quinby and compare them with my notes about the Whitfield family ..., will see that Mrs. Jane Quinby must have been the widow of Mr. Richard Porter of Bayham, and so a daughter of Robert Whitfield, sister of Thomas Whitfield of Mortlake, and aunt of Henry Whitfield of Connecticut."

NEHGR, 65:163, shows that Edmond Hawes of Solihull, Warwickshire, married before 1600 to Jane Porter, daughter of Richard Porter of Bayham, co. Sussex. Note n states, "Richard Porter, of Bayham, co. Susses, father of Jane, married Jane, daughter of Robert Whitfield, of Worth in the same county. He was fourth in descent from William Porter, of Markham, Nottinghamshire. After his death his widow married Edward Quinby, Esquire, of Titchfield, Hampshire." http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/GEN-MEDIEVAL/2002-09/1031460445 NEHGR= New England Historical & Genealogical Register
