Biography

Margaret (or Margery) de Quincy, the daughter and heiress of Robert de Quincy, by Hawise of Chester,[1] suo jure Countess of Lincoln, daughter of Hugh, Earl of Chester.[2] Margaret was born before 1217,[2] probably about 1206, based on the birthdates of her children.

Marriages and Children

Margaret married first, as his second wife, John de Lacy, Knt., Earl of Lincoln,[1] before 21 June 1221.[2][3] John de Lacy was one of 25 Magna Carta Surety Barons.[2] They had one son and three daughters.
  • Edmund, Knt., Constable of Chester, was born about 1230, married at Woodstock early in 1247 to Alice (or Alasia) de Saluzzo[3] and they had three children.[2] Edmund died testate on 2 June 1258.[2][3]
  • Maud, married Richard de Clare, Knt., Earl of Gloucester and Hereford.[2]
  • Margaret, presumably died without issue before 1253.[2]
  • unnamed,[2] perhaps Idonea.[4] See "Idonia" under Research Notes on John de Lacy's profile.
Sir John de Lacy, Earl of Lincoln, died 22 July 1240,[2] after a long illness.[3] Margaret married second to Walter Marshal, Knt., 8th Earl of Pembroke[1][3] on 6 January 1241/2 and they had no issue.[2] Sir Walter Marshal, Earl of Pembroke, died at Goodrich Castle, Herefordshire, on 24 November 1245.[2]
She married third to Richard de Wiltshire before 7 June 1252,[3] when they received a grant to "Margery, countess of Lincoln and Pembroke, and Richard de Wilteshir, and their heirs, of a yearly fair at their manor of Chelebiry [Chelbury, Lincolnshire] on the vigil and the feast of St. Andrew and the six days following".[5][6] Richardson mentions the grant, omitting the words "and their heirs", and does not state there was a marriage.[2]

Lands and Titles

During/after first marriage:
  • In 1231 John and Margaret released their claim to the main Quincy estates to Margaret's uncle, Roger de Quincy. In return, Roger granted them and their issue her mother's dower.[2]
  • On 22 November 1232, John de Lacy became the Earl of Chester at Margaret's mother's insistence.[2] The position to be held in the name of the Count of Lincoln, to John and his heirs by Margaret, his wife.[3]
  • Margaret's dower was assigned in January 1240/1.[3]
During/after second marriage:
  • Walter was granted the Earldom of Pembroke on 27 October 1241, after the death of his brother, Gilbert, in a tournament.[2]
  • On 15 March 1242/3, Margaret and Walter were in receipt of the lands descending from her mother.[3]
  • After Walter's death, Margaret recovered dower out of lands in Ireland[2] of Walter Marshal, granted by charter dated 28 June 1248.[6]
  • A charter dated 26 May 1250 records the restoration of property, granted to "Margaret Countess of Lincoln", to William de Vescy, et al.[6]

Death and Burial

Margaret, Countess of Lincoln and Pembroke, died at Hampstead, Middlesex, shortly before 30 March 1266 and was buried near her father at the Church of the Hospitallers, Clerkenwell, Middlesex.[2][3]

According to Marlyn Lewis Margaret married (3rd) Richard de Wiltshire.

The source cited is Complete Peerage, 2nd edn, Vol. 7, p. 680. This does indeed show the marriage, citing a grant of 1252 given in translation here

Cal. Charter Rolls, Vol. I (Henry III pt 1), (1908), p. 393.

Richardson mentions the grant in MCA 2011 Vol. 2, p. 515, omitting the words "and their heirs", but doesn't show a marriage.

(CP has a few minor corrections in Vol. 14, p. 436, but no second thoughts about this)
