Lawrence Rabenstein was a Pennsylvanian.

Lawrence, son of Amos Fischer Rabenstein and Cecelia Swartz,^[1] was born 19 April 1861 in Manheim Township, York County, Pennsylvania.^[1] His parents had him baptized 23 June 1861 at Saint Jacobs Stone Lutheran and Reformed Church in Brodbecks, Manheim Township.^[1] He grew up in a large, farming family that owned property in Manheim Township valued at $900 in 1870.^[2] The household then was comprised of his parents Amos (age 33, farmer) and Cecilia Rabenstine (27), Lawrence (listed as Laura, 10), and his siblings Anna Mary (8), George (6), Emanuel (5), Amos (3) and Elias (1).^[2]

Before 1880 the family had moved to Clay Township, Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania, and grown to encompass Amos (age 45, farmer) and Cecelia Ravenstine [sic] (38), Lorenzo (19), Amanda [sic, Anna] (16), Emanuel (14), Amos (11), Lydia Ann (8), Ellen (6), Jonathan (4) and Adam (1).^[3]

On 14 December 1884 in Saltillo, Huntingdon County, he married Pheba "Alice" Hershey, daughter of Christian Abraham Hershey and Sarah Elizabeth Mort.^[4] They had at least 12 children:

After their marriage the couple settled in Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania, where between 1885 and 1896 they lived in Cherry Grove, Clay Township;^[5] Newburg;^[18] and Cherrytown, Hopewell Township.^[106] They relocated to Riddlesburg, Broad Top Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvania before 1897.^[131]

Before 1900 they rented a home in Hopewell, Broad Top Township, that encompassed Lawrence (age 39, coke drawer), Pheba A. (39, mother of nine, all living), Albert Samuel (15, day laborer), Lillian May "Lillie" (14), Harvey Ruben (12), Etta Cecilia "Ettie" (11), Emma Frances (9), Laura Belle (8), Mary "Anna" (7), Elizabeth Henrietta (5) and Drucilla "Pearl" (3).^[145]

Three more children were born between 1900 and 1910, when the household included Lawrence (age 48, coal miner), Pheba A. (48, mother of 12, all living), Harvey (22, coal miner), Etta (20), Emma (19), Laura (18), Mary (16), Elizabeth (14), Pearl (11), Martha Ellen (10), Eva Myrtle (7) and Aramina Catherine "Carrie" (4).^[146] Only the three youngest remained at home in 1920, when L. Samuel (age 58, coal miner), Alice (58), Martha (19), Eva (17) and Carrie (14) comprised the household.^[147]

About this time Lawrence and his son Harvey were caught in an underground explosion due to a delayed detonation in the coal mine where they were working. This resulted in him losing an eye and having a steel plate put in his head (cheek area).^{[citation needed]}

Before 1935 the couple returned to Wood Township, Huntingdon County, where in 1940 Laurence (age 78, disabled) and Alice (77) resided with their son Harvey (52, miner) and grandson.^[148] Both seniors were disabled and living on public assistance.^[148] The record shows that Alice and Lawrence had ended their formal education in the fourth grade, while Harvey had finished the sixth.^[148]

Lawrence died 24 March 1953 in Broad Top City, Huntingdon County, and was buried there at the Broad Top Independent Order of Odd Fellows Cemetery.^[149]
