Mary Jane (Race) Gibbs at the age of 19 first married Ichabod Gibbs (John Gibbs eldest brother) they married on December 29, 1849; after Ichabod’s death November 18, 1858, she was a widow & remarried my 3rd great grandfather John Charles Gibbs.

In 1850 Mary Jane (Race) Gibbs age 20 is living in Moira, Franklin, New York with her first husband Ichabod Gibbs age 23. He is working as a farmer. Their children Carlos Gibbs & Mary May Gibbs born after 1850 & before 1853 (exact birth date unknown). Their daughter Evaline Abidine Gibbs was born February 24, 1853. Mary is 28 years old when her husband Ichabod Gibbs dies November 18, 1858 (cause unknown) in Moira, Franklin, New York. She is a widow at this time.

Mary at the age of about 30 remarried Ichabod Gibbs brother John Charles Gibbs sometime in 1860 as she had moved in with her in law’s & was working as a housekeeper in their home in Bangor, Franklin, New York. Her husband John enlisted in the Civil War on August 13, 1862 at Malone, Franklin County, New York at 24 years of age, to serve three years. He mustered in as a private with the New York 106th Regiment Volunteer Infantry, Company H on August 27, 1862.

Their son Ell Banard Gibbs was born January 9, 1863 in Bangor, Franklin, New York & his father John Charles Gibbs was wounded at the “Battle Of Monocacy” and was in the hospital since July 9, 1864; however no discharge was furnished at this time. He was transferred February 2, 1865 to Company H 14th Regiment Veteran Reserve Corp and was discharged on June 28, 1865 at Washington D.C.

Their son Samuel Elmer Gibbs was born October 21,1865 in Bangor, Franklin, New York. Mary is 39 years of age when their daughter Elsie Jane Gibbs was born July 20, 1869 in Bangor, Franklin, New York.

In 1870 John & Mary are living in Bangor, Franklin, New York with their children. Mary May Gibbs age 19, Evaline Abidine Gibbs age 17, Ell Banard Gibbs age 8, Samuel Elmer Gibbs age 4 & Elsie Jane Gibbs age 1. John is a farmer and Mary is keepinghouse. The value of real estate is at $3,000 & value of personal estate at $400.

Mary’s father Jonathan Race dies April 30, 1872 in Swanton, Franklin, Vermont.

In 1875 John & Mary are living in Dickinson, Franklin, New York with their children Ell, Samuel & Elsie. John is farming at this time.

In 1880 the couple are living in Dickinson, Franklin, New York with their children Ell (at work on farm), Samuel (at home) & Elsie (at school).

In 1900 John & Mary are living in Waverly, Franklin, New York with their daughter Elsie (doing housework) & her husband Leslie Johnson (working as a day laborer). John is still farming. In 1905 the couple are living in Waverly, Franklin, New York farming. In 1910 Mary & John are living in Waverly, Franklin, New York.

GIBBS-In St. Regis Falls, June 17, Mrs. John C. Gibbs, aged 80 years. Deceased had been an invalid for 7 years but was serenely patient in her helplessness. She was a faithful member of the M.E. Church for 60 years. Her husband, one son, Ell Gibbs, and three daughters survive her. The latter are Mrs. Augustine Goodwin, of South Berwick, Me.; Mrs. Geo. E. Brown, and Mrs. Leslie Johnson, of St. Regis Falls.
