Samuel Race was christened on 08 Jun 1758 in Biggleswade, Bedford. His parents were John and Mary Race.[1]
Samuel was the seventh child of twelve and the third surviving son. His parents and grandparents had been innkeepers and farmers. William his oldest brother was the heir and inherited Road Farm. William's his first born son was John Wills Race esq. The next brother John was a victualler. Samuel became a corn factor and younger brother James a butcher.
Samuel fathered two illegitmate children with Martha Barrett between 1789 and 1792. Then finally in 1793 they went down to Westminster and on 14 October 1793 Sam and Martha were married in St George, Hanover Square. At the time they were both residents in the parish[2]
Sam and Martha returned to Biggleswade and had another son Daniel. Daniel was born on 15 Sep 1802 and christened on 08 Oct 1802 in Biggleswade.[3]
In 1809 Samuel failed to pay some debts and ended up in Bedford County Gaol. Little was recorded other than he was a corn dealer from Biggleswade. Samuel was committed on 30 March and discharged on 1 June.[4]
Samuel died in 1837 in Biggleswade aged 80. He was buried at St Andrew churchyard on 21 May 1837[5]
