Sophie Racette was born at St-Charles-sur-Richelieu on July 17, 1803 and was baptized there the next day. She was the first child of seven and the first daughter of five for Louis Racette and Françoise Gauvreau Two of her younger sisters would die as infants.
Sophie Racette marriedAlexis Labossière on April 26, 1825 at Beloeil, Quebec. He was the fifth child of Jean Baptiste Labossière and Marie Therese Gervais.
Alexis and Sophie are known to have had at least seven children, all born at Beloeil between 1826 and 1842. They had five sons and two daughters, but sadly the first three children all died; one at age 19 years, one at five, and one an infant death. At least two are known to have married.
The family is found in the 1851 [1] Canadian census living at Beloeil. The four surviving children are all there, the older three all having died young before this census.
Alexis Labossiere died at the asylum of the Aliénés of the St-Michel Archange Hospital, Beauport near Quebec City on Nov. 3, 1858 and was buried in their cemetery Nov. 7, 1858. Sophie moved to Farnham and she passed away there on June 17, 1880 and she was buried there two days later. At her burial, Sophie is recorded as the widow of Charles Alexis Lisotte and her youngest son, Charles, who was present at the burial is recorded as Charles Lisotte. It is presumed that the family had hanged their name to avoid embarrassment over the husband and father's insanity.
