Reuben Radford
Reuben Radford (John3, John2, George1) was born 1755 in Campbell County, Virginia, and died 19 Dec 1819 in Morgan County, Georgia. He married Elizabeth Hackworth Abt. 1774 in Virginia, daughter of George Hackworth and Ann Leftwich. She was born 1756 in Bedford, Cumberland, Virginia, USA, and died 1855 in Perry County, Alabama. [1]
A Soldier of the Revolution serving in the Virginia Militia. DAR #A093372
First option:1. George Radford/Ann Massey (will names sons: John, George, Richard; ?grandson, Jonathan Jones Radford) 2. John Radford/Elizabeth Maxey 3. John Radford/Jane Johnson 4. Reuben Radford I/Phoebe Gibson. Second option: maintains 1, and then 2. John Radford/Elizabeth Maxey 3. Reuban Radford I/Elizabeth Hackworth [but there was a Reuban/Phoebe Gibson & he didn't have 2 sons named Reuban]. Third option: maintains 1. and then 2.Richard Radford/Anne. This places the three known siblings that moved to Georgia (Reuban, Henry, Julia) as Richard's children simply because all other known Radfords are documented - and he had 9 children named in his will, as well as a daughter-in-law & grandchildren! His will named 5 daughters & 4 sons, which did not include Reuben, Henry, Julia. Fourth option: maintains 1,2,3 then 4. Jonathan Jones Radford (named in George's will?)/Rebecca. 5. Reuban Radford II/Elizabeth Hackworth. The main reason for this option is that only one Hackworth family has been found in Virginia during the Revolutionary War period - that of George Hackworth. The only place known where Radford & Hackworth families ever lived at the same time is Bedford County (later Campbell), Virginia where Jonathan Jones Radford & George Hackworth lived (only known Radford family in Bedford County). Not much is known about Jonathan Jones Radford, but, IF he was named as a grandson in George Radford's will [have not found a source with a transcription of the will], he had to be the son of John or Richard. Jonathan Jones Radford may well be the father of the three siblings (Reuban II, Henry, Julia) that moved to Georgia, but more documentation is needed to establish who Jonathan Jones Radford was (especially the George Radford will). He moved to Bedford County about 1750 (and we don't know where he came from) and is listed on records in the 1770s and was found in Pittsylvania, VA in 1785 with 10 members in the household. His wife was named Rebecca. (Most likely candidate given the three known siblings not found in wills/records of the other potential fathers.) ALL OF THE ABOVE ARE SPECULATION & NOT ALL RELATIONSHPS ARE DOCUMENTED.
THIS REUBEN RADFORD'S PARENTS, SIBLINGS, AND PLACE OF BIRTH NOT KNOWN AND HIS WIFE'S NAME WAS ELIZABETH PER HIS WILL (NOT PHOEBE GIBSON). What is known: Reuben Radford is documented by the DAR as a Revolutionary soldier in the Virginia militia. He was born Virginia, married in Bedford County (later Campbell), where his family lived before migrating to Georgia in 1784/85. His homes in GA: Wilkes Co, 1785 to 1783/4; Oglethorpe Co, 1794 to 1807; Morgan Co, 1808 to 1819. He died in 1819 Morgan County, GA and is buried in the Radford Cemetery (a memorial plaque placed later mistakenly names his wife as Mary Ann Hackworth). Known children: Vina, Elizabeth, Shadrack, Francis, William Tarpley, Polly Ann, Sarah (all born Bedford/Campbell Co), Temperance, Elijah, Obediah, John, Reuben Wesley, Samuel (all born Oglethorpe). There are numerous deed, tax, census, and other records to verify the preceding. His wife, Elizabeth Hackworth Radford was living with their widowed daughter, Polly Ann Watters, in 1850 Perry, Alabama at age 94, but her exact DOD is not known. Reuben is likely descended from George Radford of Essex, but just which descendant was his father is not certain. I have read that he is proven not to be the Reuben Radford that married Phoebe Gibson (thought to be son of John Radford/Jane Johnson), but NO records establish that fact. Too much information has been lost due to careless merges that mixed two Reubans and others that mixed John & Richard Radford.
Will of Reuban Radford, Will Book B 1815-1830, pp. 68-70: In the name of God Amen, I, Reuben Radford, of Morgan County and State of Georgia, being in health and perfect mind and memory thanks be to God, calling into mind the mortality of my body and knowing that it is appointed for all men to die, do make and ordain this my last will and testament revoking all others. That is to say, first of all I recommend my soul unto the hands of Almighty God that give it and my body to the Earth to be buried in a Christian like manner by my Executor hereafter named and as touching such worldly Estate wherewith it hath pleased God to bless me with in life I give and dispose of the same in the following manner form to wit. First I constitute make and ordain my loving sons WILLIAM RADFORD and JOHN RADFORD the Sole Executors of this my last will and testament. First it is my desire my property left thus remaining shall be by my Executors sold at a credit of Twelve months and all the nett proceeds to be equally divided between my loving son John Radford and my loving daughter POLLY RADFORD and my two other loving sons REUBEN WESTLY RADFORD and SAMUEL RADFORD, leaving a child's part to my "loving wife" ELIZABETH RADFORD to be disposed of as she may best think proper. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this 19th day of December 1818. Signed Reuben Radford (mark). Wit: Joseph Smith, William Harrison, John Radford, John H Harrison J.P.
