John Radford Sr. was a Virginia colonist.

John Radford Sr. lived in Virginia.

John (Robert)Redford (b:1565 in England) had five sons, one was John (b:1595) who had a son Bruen (1645), who had a son George Radford-39 (1665), who had a son John (1694) who married Elizabeth Maxey).

Another son of John (1565) was Francis (1615) who had a son John (1674)who married Anne Maxey. In the family trees there are several John's and several Maxey's.

The original name was Redford, but just before the Revolutionary War, some changed their names to Radford More than reference has been made to John's middle name as being Massey, his mother's maiden name.

  • In 1704, John was listed with 775 acres of land in Henrico Co. (See page 228 of source.)

[2] This is the amount his father patented in 1687. There is a conflicting patent for 254 acres of this land as evidenced by PB 9, p.287, dated 7 Nov 1700 when John Davis patented 254 acres adj Francis Radford, the Roundabout Slash, granted Redford on 5 Aug 1699, and on 1 Jul 1672 joined in a patent for 629 acres and by him deserted. The 1687 patent does state that the 1672 patent interfered with adjacent lands and had been rectified.

  • HENRICO CO VA ORPHANS' COURT BOOK 1766-1739; Pauline Pearce Warner p.107 5 Oct 1725 John Redford was present at the Orphans Court at Varina for the County of Henrico as one of the Gentlemen Justices.

  • John Radford was acting Constable and Justice of the peace in 1726 Henrico County,Virginia. (See page 44 of source.[4]
  • Goochland Co Deed Book 4, p.53 1 Sep 1742 James Gates and wife Ann sold 100 acres to John Ratford. Located on the South side of the James River.

The Will of Susannah Maxey found in Goochland Deed Book 4, p.212, mentions her daughter Elizabeth Radford. Will is dated 31 May 1743. Also Redford & Maxey had adjoining property lines.[6]

Tree dividing sd Walter and sd Silvanus ...Wm Blackburn's line ..Nathaniel Bassit's line ..Edward Maxey Junr ...John Radford's line to the Dividing line. John Radford was one of the witnesses.

Goochland DB 5, p.248 19 May 1747 John Radford of Southam to Joseph Bondurant and Agnes his wife, dau of the said John Radford, of parish of King Wm. Natural Love & affection for daughter Agnes Bondurant ...125 acres on North side of Jones Creek ...line of Col. William Mayo Dec'd and the said John Radford. Part of larger tract patented by Daniel Thomas decd dated 16 Jun 1727. Signed: John Radford. Witness: James X Ford, Wm. Lax, Marduk Hix. Ack. By Radford 19 May 1747.

JOHN2 RADFORD, SR. (GEORGE1) was born December 09, 1694 in Virginia, and died June 28, 1773 in Cumberland County, Kentucky. He met ELIZABETH MAXEY November 1719 in Cumberland, Henrico Co., Virginia, daughter of EDWARD MAXEY and SUSANNAH GATES. She was born Abt. 1704 in Virginia.
