Biography

James was born in 1838. He was the son of Thompson Ragan and Nancy McPherson. J.T. married (first) Martha Ann Brown (1840 - 1894); following her death, he married (second) Caroline A Moore (1855 - 1907). J.T. passed away in 1911, and was buried at Rose Hill Cemetery, Columbia, Maury County, Tennessee.[1]

"Jas. T. Ragan, b. Apr. 7, 38, near Spring Hill, is son of Thompson and Nancy (McPherson) Ragan. He mar. Ann, dau. of Mitchell and Sallie (Lamb) Brown. Their children--John, in Nashville; Sallie, widow of --- Deglopper, of Nashville;; Geo., of Columbia; Laura, wife of M. A. Robason, of Texas; Jas. McCoy, d. Aug. 10, 1906, in Nashville (where for eight years prior he had been manager of the Prudential Insurance Co. for Central Tenn., and before that bookkeeper in Nashville for J. Ellis for seven years); Wm., of Columbia; Bailey, of Ky.; Annie, wife of J. R. Martin, of Columbia; Ella, wife of Jas. B. Harmon, of Columbia; Beulah, wife of Ed. Meadows, railroading in Okla.; Nora Belle, wife of Sam Campbell, of Nashville. Mrs. Ragan d. in 92, and in 96 he mar. Callie, dau. of W. N. [sic] and Ruth (Fitzpatrick) Moore. He owns a cottage home and 10 a. ½ m. W. of Carter's Cr."[2]

Obituary

J. T. Ragan died at his residence near Carters Creek Sunday morning at four o'clock. He had been ill for a long time. Mr. Ragan was 75 years old, and is survived by one brother, three sisters, his wife, and several children. The children are: George Ragan, of Columbia; J.W. Ragan, of Nashville; L. B. Ragan of Paducah, Ky.; Mrs. E. V. Ritter, of Red Rock, Ariz.; Mrs. F. B. Campbell, of Nashville; Mrs. J. D. Harmon, Mrs. J. R. Martin and Mrs. Morrow Robinson. The funeral services were conducted at the residence by Rev. M. E. Alford, pastor of the Methodist church at Thompson's Station, and the burial was in Rose Hill cemetery Monday.

Mr. Ragan was one of the most prominent and best known farmers of the Carers [sic, Carter's] Creek valley section of the county, and was a man of considerable property. The deceased was long a member of the Methodist church.[3]

James was born in 1838. He passed away in 1911.
