1910 Census, Butler Co., KY: The household is: Tom S Ragland 45, Fred Ragland 14, Aubra Ragland 12, Courtland Ragland 11, Noka Ragland 8, Grady Ragland 7.
His mother-in-law's diary (2 May 1936) notes "Fred got a telegram that his father was very ill today.[1] T. S. Ragland died a few days later. On 7 May, she records that he "started for Kentucky today, called there by his father's death. Leona went with him to Walsenburg." On 27 May she reports "Fred got home from Kentucky yesterday. He wants to go back."
Event: moved with his family back to Kentucy from Colorado on 2 SEP 1936, as noted in his mother-in-law's dirary: Monte Vista CO to Butler County, KY. "buried myself in my work today to forget my lonelyness".
Later, he was abandoned by his wife and children. (OCT 1939)

A Fred J Ragland is noted as living outside of Monte Vista in the 1930 census, in a household with another male, both farmers. Vital stats fit him but the anomaly is that he ought to have been living with his wife by this time.
Short obituary from the Louisville Courier Journal, March 1, 1981: "Fred Ragland, 85, of Anne Lynne Manor, died Saturday at Baptist Hospital East. He was a native of Butler County, a retired meat cutter, an Army veteran of World War I and a member of Churchill Downs Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2921. Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Ordean Kindt [sic] of California, Mrs. Barbara Magness of Colorado and Mrs. Donna Graham of Kansas; two sisters, Mrs. Nokie Shelton of Jeffersonville and Mrs. Gradie Fisher of Utah; two brothers, Aubrey Ragland of Morgantown and Courtland Ragland; and eight grandchildren. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tues day at O.D. White & Sons. 2727 S. Third St, with burial in Evergreen Cemetery. Visitation at the funeral home will be after 5 p.m. Sunday. "
