Ron Ragland has English Ancestors

Biography

Ron Ragland was born in Norfolk, Virginia.
Crown of St Edward
[2]

I am a descendant of Evan Ragland Sr. (7th great grandfather) 9 degrees, who was the first RAGLAND in USA.[3] He was abducted around the year 1670 from the port of Watchet, in Somerset, England along the Bristol Channel. He was about 14 years old. He was brought to America and sold into servitude. He died 30th May, 1717 in New Kent County, Virginia. He was member of St. Peters Parish, which is the 1st church of the first 1st lady.

On the sixth of January 1759 the Rector of St Peter's Parish, the Rev'd Mr. David Mossom, solemnized the marriage of Col. George Washington and the Widow Custis. It has always been assumed that another future First-Lady, Letitia Christian, later the wife of President John Tyler, was baptized in the parish church in 1790.[4]

Robert ap Jevan, alias Robert Ragland was born, 1408, Monmouthshire, Wales. He was orphaned at age 8 and went to live with his uncle, Sir William ap Thomas, knt., in the Raglan castle. He remained there until he married (Joan Clerke in 1430) at which point he assumed the surname Ragland. He was the first person to have the surname, Ragland, which denotes the area he came from. He is my 13th great grandfather.[5]

I am a descendant of those that actually resided at the Raglan castle.[6] Construction began in about 1415, by Herbert Earls and Beauforts. The castle became a Tudor Palace. It was destroyed during the civil war, 16 Aug 1646. At that time, "1st Marquess of Worcester," Henry Somerset (3rd cousin 11 X removed) was in charge.[7]

Sir Thomas Fairfax, commander of the Parliamentary Army came up in person to finish matters. Upon surrender, the Marquis was brought to London and placed under custody of Black Rod, in a private house in Covent Garden. He died there[8] worn out by stress and anxiety of the siege. The parliament gave him a handsome funeral at the expense of his estates.[9]

The Raglan castle was large enough to shelter as many as 150 people. The castle was known for "The Yellow Tower of Gwent." It projected to the front with a great hexagonal keep, five stories high, each of its sides thirty-two feet long. After the castles destruction, the library books & manuscripts that had been collected by the Herberts, Beauforts, & Somersets were destroyed.[10]

I am also related to Geoffrey Ragland-160[11]albeit relationship is 26 degrees. He was born in the Raglan Castle, Usk, Monmouthshire, Wales, in about 1176.

Sir Thomas, "11th Earl of Warwick, Marshal of England" de Beauchamp-74[12]was born in about 1314, in the Warwick Castle, Warwickshire, England. I am his 17th great grandson. He was one of the Founder Knights of the Order of the Garter in 1348. He died in 1369.[13]He is buried in St. Mary's Collegiate Church, Warwick, Warwickshire, England.

I am a relative of Nathaniel Hardin "Grandpa Pat" Ragland [14] (4th cousin, 4 X removed). From 1868-1888, he and his family resided in the "McLean House," site of General Lee's surrender. He was a merchant, and Justice of the Peace in Appomattox, Virginia. In 1948 he married Martha Walker Trent.

Martha Walker Trent Ragland, "Grandma Pat" continues to write, "In 1868 my husband bought the house at Appomattox Court House in which General Lee and General Grant met and drew up and signed the articles of capitulation, at the time of the surrender. At the time he bought it, it was owned by Major McLean, who also owned the land on which the first battle of the Civil War was fought. It is known as "Manassas" if in the South & "The Battle of Bull Run" if you are a Northerner. Strange that the first battle of the war and the final surrender should both take place on land owned by the same man.[15]

I am (7th cousin once removed) to William Trent Ragland, Jr -1620.[16] He was:

  • President of Superior Stone (major producer of crushed stone in Southeast)
  • Founder of, William Trent Ragland Jr., Foundation (55 years of contributions to charitable & educational organizations in North Carolina)
  • Received North Carolina Society Award, 2004
  • Research Triangle Institute was named in honor of his father
  • Created "The Anna Wood Library Fund" at the University of North Carolina (UNC) Chapel Hill, NC in honor of his wife. The fund still continues to make contributions to the UNC Chapel Hill, NC, Library.

Although I was born in Norfolk Virginia, I lived on Outer Banks of North Carolina (Kitty Hawk) from birth until I was 4 years old. Mom was Christmas shopping in Norfolk, Virginia, when she suddenly realized it was time for my arrival. As a toddler I lived on the Albemarle/Currituck Sound where Mom & Dad owned and ran a seafood restaurant, known as, "The Sound Side Restaurant." Mom would always say that I could be found down by the water, playing in the Sound. When I was 4, Mom & Dad moved to Norfolk, Virginia, where Dad opened his own Jewelry Store (corner of Park & Brambleton Avenue).

As a teenager, I worked as a Motel Groundskeeper, Housekeeper, front Desk Clerk, and Motel Manager. I also worked at Sears, while in High School. After High School I attended Old Dominion University for a short period of time. Thereafter I worked as a Poly Band Operator for Snark and Dyneric, a Carman Apprentice for Norfolk and Western Railroad, an Aircraft Mechanic Apprentice, and Journeyman Mechanic, Facilities Planner, and Real Property Accountable Officer, (RPAO) for the Federal Government. I retired after 35 years of civil service with the Federal Government. I was also a Private Investigator and Realtor.

I am now retired and living on the OBX of NC. Guess I just never got over my desire to play in the Sound, so I now find myself living on Kitty Hawk Bay, in Kill Devil Hills, NC., not far from, "The Soundside Restaurant." During the summer months I love to work outside in my yard, down by the Sound. In the winter, I research genealogy from time to time. I have 3 sons and a daughter.

Relationship

It is interesting that all of my ancestors on the male side, "Ragland" have all lived in Virginia. From the time of arrival to USA by Evan Ragland in abt. 1670 up until the birth of my children, all of the males in this line have lived in VA for a period of their life. Per DNA results I am a descendant of Evan Ragland.

I am a relative of Queen Victoria[17] (albeit 13th cousin 2 X removed) who created the title "Baron Raglan" in 1852, which she gave to Lord FitzRoy Somerset (my 9th cousin 3 X removed).[18] It was in honor of him being commander of the British troops during the Crimean War. Following the Raglan motto, "I scorn to change or fear." He is also known for origin of the "Raglan Sleeve." He wore a coat with this style of sleeve after loss of his arm in - "The Battle of Waterloo."

Relationship

I am a distant cousin to Queen Elizabeth, II (Queen of United Kingdom and Northern Ireland since, 1952 - 2022).[19]

"A people which takes no pride in the noble achievements of remote ancestors, will never achieve anything worthy to be remembered with pride by remote descendants."[20]

The family seat was at Cefntilla Court, Llandenny in Monmouthshire Wales.[21] An inscription over the door reads, "This house with 238 acres of land was purchased by 1,623 of the friends, admirers, and comrades in arms of the late field Marshal, Lord Raglan GCB & presented by them to his sons and heirs forever in a lasting memorial of affectionate regard and respect." Cefntilla was sold after death of ancestor, Fitzroy John Somerset "5th Baron Raglan" in 2010.[22] He willed Cefntilla, and the 350 acre estate, located at Usk, in Monmouthshire Wales, to his nephew, who sold it soon thereafter. Fitzroy John Somerset is my 11th cousin once removed.

Ron Ragland has Welsh ancestors.

Lord Raglan (4th Baron) wrote a book titled, "The Hero" A Study In Tradition, Myth, & Drama. He opens the preface with, It is often said that, "there is no smoke without fire." Meaning of this expression is that they who wish to believe that any story or part of the story, makes it historically true.[23]

I am 21st great grandson of, Griffith (Madog) ap Madog Maelor (1121-1191) "Prince of Powys Fadog"[24] He consolidated the territory ruled by his father, after his death. He also founded the Cistercian Valley Crucis Abbey, Llangollen, Wales.[25]

My parents, according to "Relationship Finder" are related. Their connection was made, with Sir Matthew ap Ieuan aka ap Evan ap Jevan (Ap_leuan-19). I am his 15th great grandson via both maternal & paternal paths. He was born 1368-1419, Glamorgan, Wales.[26] From here, on male side, I trace back to, Casnar Wledig, who was born 0440, Montgomeryshire, Wales. I am his 38th great grandson. He was a famous Welsh ruler, top of # of Patronymics- The ancestry of Gwaithfoed of Powys- straight line pedigree with no additional details- regarded as legendary.[27][28]

I would be remiss if I did not acknowledge that I along with many other Ragland's wish to see ourselves connected to Lord Raglan, the Raglan Castle, Appomattox, Virginia, McLean house where the articles of capitulation were signed, Queen of Sussex, or our poem/song, "Raglan Road.[29]

I am also, 21st great grand nephew of Llewelyn (Gwynedd) ap Gruffudd aka "Prince of Wales" (1225-1282) who was a member of royalty, nobility/aristocracy in Wales in the middle ages[30]

I am 1st cousin 12 X removed of, Elizabeth I, Queen of England[31] (1558-1603). She is a member of the "House of Tudor." She is remembered as one of England's most influential monarchs, a European Aristocrat.

Crown of St Edward

I am related to (11th cousin once removed) Sir Winston Churchill.[32] He served as the British Prime Minister twice, from 10 May 1940 - 26 Jul 1945 (61st Prime Minister) and from 26 Oct 1951 - 05 Apr 1955 (63rd Prime Minister). He is best known as England's Prime Minister during World War II.

As an ancestor of an, "Old Virginia Family" I choose to be delighted by the realism whether or not all or merely parts of my legendary past are true. Meanwhile I continue to search for sources that supports, "Raglan Road" where I now live. Must be in my genes.[33]

I am related to Temperance Flowerdew[34] 9th Great Grandson (direct relationship). She was born 1590 in Norfolk, England and died about 1628 in Jamestown, Virginia. She was married to Virginia Governor, George Yeardley, and after his death, she married Virginia Governor, Francis West.

  • Qualifying Ancestor of Jamestowne Society

Note: Disputed Legendary Relationship-POCAHONTAS, Powhatan-3

According to William "Night Owl" Deyo, Patawomeck, Tribal Historian, in the Publication Patawomeck Tides, Vol., 12, Number 1, 15 Sep 2009:[44] "A book was published by Dr. Linwood Custalow and Angela Daniel about the true story of POCAHONTAS. This information was obtained from the sacred oral history of the Mattaponi Tribe. The book revealed that Pocahontas was first married to the Indian Kocoum, younger brother of Chief Japasaw. Their child's name was "Little Kocoum" AKA, KA OKEE. Her identity was kept secret by tribal leaders. William Strachey, Secretary for the Virginia Colony agreed with this and said that this was probably kept secret for the safety of the child. She took the name Jane and married a man named Pettus in 1631 (Col. Thomas Pettus). Col. Thomas Pettus had a son from previous marriage named Stephen who had a daughter, Susanna Pettus.[45] She, Susanna Pettus married Evan Ragland, in about 1680 in New Kent County, Virginia. I am 8 degrees from Susanna. I am 15 degrees from William Pettus[46]who was born in Norwich, Norfolk, England in 1556.

Thus my Paternal Relationship to Powhatan-3 (Pocahontas)[47] I am 14 Degrees from Pocahontas.

Maternal Relationship to Powhatan-3 (Pocahontas) 13 Degrees from Pocahontas or her husband, John Rolfe-2[48]

I have a direct relationship to 23 of the 24 Magna Carta Surety Barons, as shown below:

The Magna Carta - Seen as the English Constitution. Barons were selected to ensure that the King upheld provisions of the Charter. America's founding fathers took great inspiration from this medieval pact (safe guarded individual liberties) as they forged our Nation's founding documents, our Constitution & Bill of Rights.

  • Eustace "Lord of Alnwick" Vesci[49]I am his 23rd great grandson (direct relationship is uncertain). "Eustace de Vesci (1169/70-1216) was one of the group referred to by contemporaries as ‘the Northerners’, the original hard-line leaders of the baronial resistance to King John."

  • Roger "4th Earl of Norfolk" Bigod[50]He was born in about 1144, in England. I am his 22nd great grandson. "In 1214 Roger went with King John to Poitou. But the following year he joined in the baronial unrest which led to the Magna Carta, of which he was one of the Surety Barons."

  • Richard Percy[51]He was born in 1181 (unknown location). I am his 23rd great grandson. "A shadowy figure, he stands out less vividly than some of the northern lords with whom he was associated."

Magna Carta Project logo

  • Richard "Earl of Clare, 3rd Earl of Hertford" Clare[52]He was born in England in 1153. I am his 22 great grandson. "He was appointed to the Twenty Five, most probably in recognition less of his personal qualities than his family’s exalted standing in the realm."

Magna Carta Project logo

  • Richard Montfichet[53]I am his 22nd great grandson. "The largest group represented on the committee of Twenty Five was not so much the hard-line barons from northern England as the leading landowners of East Anglia and the south-east. Once the movement of rebellion against John had gathered strength and spread out, it was these men who were at its head and who, after June, took the lead in enforcing the Charter. One of these home counties lords was Richard de Montfichet."

Relationship

  • Robert "Lord of Dunmow Castle, Essex" FitzWalter[54]He was born in England in 1180. I am his 23rd great grandson. "Robert FitzWalter (d. 1235) has as good a claim as anyone to being regarded as the leader of the baronial opposition to John, styling himself in letters ‘Marshal of the Army of God’. An enigmatic personality, by turns shifty, querulous, conspiratorial and high principled, he played a major part in the events of 1215 and so contributed substantially to Magna Carta becoming part of the fabric of English political society."

Relationship

  • William Huntingfield[55]He was born in England in 1160. I am his 23rd great grandson. "William de Huntingfield was another of the group of East Anglian landowners who were active in the opposition to King John. He had connections with Robert FitzWalter, the main rebel leader and one of the Twenty Five, and with another rebel, the Lincolnshire knight, Oliver de Vaux. He held seven knights’ fees of the honor of Eye in Suffolk, including the manor of Huntingfield, from which he took his name, and several knights’ fees of other baronies, including that of Lancaster.

  • John "of Warkworth" FitzRobert, formerly Clavering[56]He was born in 1151 in England. I am his 22nd great grandson. "John FitzRobert (c. 1190-1240) held estates distributed across two regions of England, the far north along the Scottish border, and East Anglia and Essex. He accordingly had ties with the two main, but largely separate, groups of barons who rose in opposition to King John in 1216."

Magna Carta Project logo

  • Geoffrey :5th Earl of Essex" Mandeville[57]He was born in England in 1186. I am his 21st great grandson. "In the light both of his grievances against John and of his family ties with Robert FitzWalter, it is not surprising to find Geoffrey on the rebel side in 1215. In June he was named to the Twenty Five and, when the barons parcelled out the government of the country in the autumn, he was assigned responsibility for Essex."

Relationship

  • Robert Ros[58]He was born in England in 1170. I am his 22nd great grandson. "Robert is an enigmatic individual who had close ties with Eustace de Vesci but did not openly join the rebellion until just before Runnymede. He probably felt a conflict between his sense of loyalty to his fellow Northerners and his obligation of obedience to the king."

Magna Carta Project logo

  • William "Lord of Stanway Castle, Essex" Lanvallei[59]He was born in 1190 (unknown location). I am his 22nd great grandson. "It is a mark of King John’s mismanagement of the nobility that he should have so alienated such a man that he ended up on the baronial side in 1215."

Magna Carta Project logo

  • William "Lord of Curry Malet, Somerset" Malet[60]He was born in England, before 1174. I am his 22nd great grandson. "William Malet (c. 1175-1215) was one of the sizeable group of rebel barons who were heavily indebted to King John, making the revolt of 1215 in some sense a debtors’ revolt."

Magna Carta Project logo

  • Saher "1st Earl of Winchester" Quincy[61]I am his 21st great grandson. He was born in about 1165. "Saer was one of the most experienced administrators in the ranks of the opposition, having served as a baron of the exchequer and a justice of the bench, and was heavily involved in the negotiations with the king that led to the making of Magna Carta."

Magna Carta Project logo

  • Robert "3rd Earl of Oxford" de Vere[62]He was born in England in about 1164. I am his 21st great grandson. "The de Veres were one of the least well-endowed of the comital families and would have been loath to allow a valuable estate to slip from their grasp."

  • John "John of Chester, Earl of Lincoln, Constable of Chester" Lacy[63]He was born in England in about 1192. I am his 21st great grandson. Relationship

  • Gilbert "Earl of Gloucester and Hertford" Clare[64]He was born in about 1180 in England. I am his 21st great grandson. "The de Clares were one of the great baronial families of twelfth- and thirteenth-century England, holding wide estates in eastern and western England and beyond."

Magna Carta Project logo

  • William "Count of Aumale" Forz[65]He was born in about 1192, unknown location. I am his 24th great grandson. In 1214 William served in King Johns campaign in Poitou[1] but the next year he joined the Barons who compelled King John to sign the Magna Carta, of which he was one of the Surety Barons."

Magna Carta Project logo

  • William Marshal, "Earl of Pembroke" [66]He was born in 1190, in Normandy. I am his 22nd great grandson. He joined the barons in their muster at Stamford in the spring, and in June was named to the Twenty Five. In the civil war that followed King John’s rejection of the Charter he fought on the baronial side, and after Prince Louis’ arrival, was named marshal of his army."

Magna Carta Project logo

  • Roger "Baron of Hornby" de Montbegon[67]He was born in England in 1165. I am his 23 great grandson. "Roger de Montbegon (ca. 1165–1226) was another of the group of hard-line opponents of King John referred to by contemporaries as ‘the Northerners’."

Magna Carta Project logo

  • I am an ancestor of Magna Carta Surety Baron, Geoffrey, "The Younger." He was born in 1180, Kent England.[68] I am his 24th great grandson. "Geoffrey de Say sat in the baronial camp in an uneasy alliance with Geoffrey de Mandeville, his cousin but also his rival for the inheritance of the de Mandeville earls of Essex. The competition between the two men and their families affords a reminder that there were divisions within the baronial camp as well as between the rebel barons and the king."

Magna Carta Project logo
  • I am 21st great grandson of, William (Mowbray) de Mowbray-151, Magna Carta Surety Baron.[69] "Mowbray was typical those lords, particularly in northern England, who had suffered at the hands of King John, felt a burning sense of grievance, and were longing for the opportunity to get their own back."

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships by comparing test results with Ron or other carriers of his ancestors' Y-chromosome or mitochondrial DNA. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Ron:

Hello, Ron!

Congratulations on certifying to work on pre-1700 profiles! It’s VERY IMPORTANT to read and understand the Help:Pre-1700 Profiles page. These profiles for deep ancestors are shared by many, and collaborating on them works best if we all follow the guidelines in the certification quiz.

Primary sources should always be added to pre-1700 profiles at the time they are created. If you don't have a source for a pre-1700 profile, it would be best to ask for help in the G2G forum before creating the profile.

Hello Ron,

Thank you so much for adding a profile for Jim Seals! Jim and his family were long-time Baha'is and well known to many of us.

I went ahead and added the Baha'i Project categories, as well as some extra links including to an article in Texas Monthly written a few years ago about him and his family. (it's a really good read!)

Thanks again!

Kind regards,

Vicky Majewski (for the Baha'i Faith Project on WikiTree)

Thank you for joining the February USBH Connecting Challenge and helping us create 3335 new profiles. Our new total is 88684.

All first-time participants can add the participant sticker to their profile. Connecting Challenge Stickers

100 Profiles
Ron Ragland created 219 new profiles during the February 2022 US Black Heritage Project Connecting Challenge.
Hi Ron,

Thanks for taking responsibility for Orphaned Profiles. This is a courtesy email to share the After Adopting Orphans FAQ which explains the special attention adopted profiles will sometimes need from their profile managers. One quick way to find the profiles you adopted is by searching your Contributions List for the word "adopted" and "manager." You can find a quick link to your Contributions List in the My WikiTree dropdown menu.

If you will be working with any profiles needing GEDCOM cleanup, the AGC tool can help with formatting so that you can concentrate on the research. You can read more about it in the WikiTree AGC FAQ.

Let me know if you have any questions,

Debi

Hi Ron,

Thanks for taking the Pre-1700 Quiz!

Because pre-1700 ancestors are shared by many descendants, working within the projects which coordinate them is essential.

Use the Pre-1700 Projects list to find one which best fits your research focus, whether time period, location, or topic. Read the goals and tasks of the project and join if it is a good fit.

Add the project tag to your Following list to be kept up to date on any activity that occurs for that project.

Can't find what you're looking for? Let me know, and I can make some suggestions! :-)

Ron--

You've probably been hard at work adding family members and getting connected to those that are already here. You should have at least a few profiles that you manage now. You've covered a lot of ground the past few weeks. So, this week we're going to look at how to work with your Watchlist: How to Manage Your Watchlist.

We are also going to give you just a few more tools that can take you even deeper into the WikiTree forest without getting lost: How to Dig a Little Deeper.

As always, your questions are welcome!

Hi Ron,

I see that you just volunteered and signed our honor code. That's great! Here at WikiTree we like to have our members involved with others; collaboration is key! Is there a particular time period, location, or topic you're interested in? Maybe you have some historically-significant ancestors? Why don't you stop by the Virginia Project, (currently led/coordinated by Liz Shifflett to see how you can participate? I'll let the leaders know you are interested!

You might be interested in one of the other Projects that can be found here.

Let me know if you need help with anything.

We are glad to have you on board!

Ron--

You've been here a week now, and we hope you enjoyed your first stop on your guided tour of WikiTree and were able to make good use of the things you learned.

Our next stop will give you some pointers on how to make your profiles stand out: How to Make the Most of a Profile.

As always, your questions are welcome!

Hi Ron,

Your question was "How does the vote deal work on tags?"

To my knowledge there is no vote on Tags. Tags are a way for you to find other Wiki Genealogist who are researching the same tags and or surnames as you are. When you click one of your tags it takes you to a page showing all those researching a surname, location or event etc. I see you have added tags for a first name, I suggest you change/edit your tag(s) to the persons surname.

Information on Tags can be found here: Tags

Hope this answered your question,

David

Hi Ron,

You use the relationship finder by clicking on the Family Tree and Genealogy Tools Tab on a profile then scroll down and click the relationship finder in the list of tools.

It shows: Ron and David are 17th cousins twice removed.

Hello Cousin, Ron.

Welcome Ron,

You are now a confirmed member, and you can get started adding your family members. As we've said, WikiTree is quite different from other genealogy sites. So, we've put together a guided tour to help you learn how to use it. Your first stop is to Start Climbing our Tree.

Tomorrow, you'll hear from a Mentor who will check in to see how you're doing and answer any questions you might have.

Next week, you'll get another message with your next stop on the guided tour.

You can also meet some of our members by joining in the fun with our Question of the Week in the G2G forum.

Happy Hunting,

Jess

Hello Ron,

Welcome to WikiTree. By now you should have received an email with helpful links to get you started on adding your family to ours.

WikiTree is different because our goal is to have one profile per person and that means we share ancestors and work together as a BIG collaborative team!

Have you found any unusual occupations in your family tree?

When you confirm your email address, you’ll be given an opportunity to volunteer to help document our collective family history. Use the Tags and comments to tell us about your genealogical interests.

When you volunteer, one of our Greeters will be happy to confirm your membership.

Happy Hunting,

Jess
