Biography

Matthew Raiford, Jr. was born in Isle of Wight, Province of Virginia on 18 Jun 1710. He was the eldest son of Matthew and Mourning Raiford. According to Battey, Matthew married Ann Wall (b. 1710, d. 1798) in 1732.[1] Other sources say his wife was named Judith.[2]

Judah is given as Matthew's wife in a Deed in 1773 (see below); of course, it is possible that Matthew had two wives, 1st, Ann Wall and 2nd, Judith. OR, it is possible that her name was Judith Ann Wall. This same deed mentions son Matthew Jr. [III].

In 1755, Matthew was listed on the Cumberland County, NC Tax List.[3][4]

On 12 Mar 1756, he received a grant for 200 acres on the northeast side of Cape Fear River in Cumberland County.[5]

Feb 3, 1759. William Terry, [Sav. Cr.] of Anson, to Cornelius Robinson, of same, for 50 pounds Va. currency, 300 acres on south side of Peedee, begin. at river opposite land of James Denson, granted Hugh Larrimor March 14, 1745 and by him conveyed to Sam'l Martin June 10, 1750; from him to Townsend Robinson; from Townsend Robinson to William Terry.

In 1763, he appeared on the Anson County List of Taxables.[7]

On 18 Apr 1771, Matthew was issued 150 acres in Anson Co., on the northeast side of Pee Dee River beginning at a white oak.[12]

On 4 Nov 1777, he signed a document for John Smith of Anson Co., regarding his (Smith's) poor health and inability to appear before the assembly concerning his allegiance.[14]

Justice of the Peace for Anson County. The Revolutionary War Category has been removed as his service is listed as Civil in the DAR records.
