Biography

Mourning Raiford was born before 1733, to Matthew and Mourning Raiford. There is no documented evidence that Mourning's middle name was "Aldrich."

She was married twice, first to William Robards, by whom she had four children:[1]

  4. William Robards, Jr., b. abt. 1758.

On 18 Nov 1760, Robards made gift deed to his four children, which were proved in Nov Court 1760[4] All the children were minors at the time of his death, and Mourning and her second husband, William Pickett were granted guardianship. Mourning and William had the following children:

  3. Hannah Pickett; m. Walter Leak
  4. Mary Pickett

On 14 Oct 1774, William Robards, Jr. went to court in Anson Co., and chose his sister's husband, James Terry as guardian.[5]

Pickett died before 1793, and Mourning was executrix of his estate. On 18 Sep 1795, Mourning filed an application to recover £17.6.6 against James Pickett, heir-at-law of William Pickett.[6]
