Notes
Note N37
Nickname: Joe (US), Pipo (Italy)
He was everyone's favorite even though he let his first wife dominate his life, so much so that he hurt his mother's feelings because he saw her so infrequently. But he was always forgiven.
He also was a natural businessman, in that he was always able to make successful deals even as a child. He set up three successful dry cleaning businesses. The first two he lost to two of his wife's brothers, and the last he gave to his son after his first wife died.
I think he was closest to Paul before he had to leave Baltimore and Manuel after that. When Paul went to work as soda machine vendor so did Joe. Aunt Angie (7/98) told me that Joe also played fast and loose with the money from the soda machines, like Paul.
He seemed to have a generous streak like his brother Paul. The difference was Joe could afford it, and his first wife kept him from overdoing it. After she died, he gave nearly everything to his son, his business, his house and most of his savings, on the grounds that he did not need much to live out his life. But when he remarried, he found that he did need some of it back but his son was not willing to let go of what he had been given.
He was great at entertaining kids. I remember that even as an old man he could make his biceps ripple like Mickey Mouse was running under the skin.
