Biography

Who lived to be 103, was the descendant of early settlers in Whitehaven, TN. She taught French and Latin to generations of students at Central High School, in Memphis. She began her career at Central in 1918, eight years after the building opened, and except for three year stint teaching in Rome, Italy, taught there until her retirement in 1959. She graduated second in her class at Vanderbilt University, devoted her life to teaching at Central. She earned a masters degree at Columbia University, and was one of the first presidents of the American Association of University Women in Memphis. Her pupils remembered her elegance, since of humor, and spirit.
