Biography

John Marcellus Rains was born 1805 in Harrison county, Virginia. Lewis County was created 18 December 1816 from Harrison County and in 1863 that part of Virginia broke away and became part of West Virginia (during the American Civil War.)

John married Mary Elizabeth Hinzman, daughter of Henry Hinzman and Charity (Coon) Hinzman. Mary was born January 29, 1811 in Hacker Creek, in what is today Lewis county, West Virginia. John's brother, Robert Roebuck Raines, married Mary's sister, Elizabeth Hinzman.

John and Mary are the parents of at least seven children. John died July 15, 1857, in Iowa and is buried in the Hall Cemetery, in Decatur county, Iowa. There is a photograph of his headstone on his Find A Grave memorial. [1]

He passed away in 1856.[2]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:

According to https://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=147226380

John Marcellus Raines and Robert (Roebuck according to DAR records) Raines Raines-780 were brothers.

If that is the case, then the parents of this profile are misattributed. In any case, this profile needs a source. Here is John Marcellus' Find A Grave: https://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=21115466
