James emigrated to USA. In 1880, he was already living in California working as a teamster. He appeared in the 1880 US census as James Rainey, age 26, living as a lodger in the household of Festus Payne in Siskiyou, California[1].
James Rainey married Lilian A Hovenden on 26 June 1884, at Scott Valley, California[2].
James and his brother Robert, who had also emigrated from Ireland to the United States, set up in business together as "Rainey Bros.", and are listed in an 1885 business directory for Siskiyou County, California, under Seiad[3].
James and Lillian Rainey had eight known children: Etta Jane Rainey (b. 1886), Charles William Rainey (b. 1887), Estella May Rainey (b. 1889), Cora Alma Rainey (b. 1890), Clarence Alexander Rainey (b. 1891), Ruth Elizabeth Rainey (b. 1892), Effie Adelle Rainey (b. 1894), Maud Lillian Rainey (b. 1895),
Lillian A Rainey died in 1896, not long after the birth of their last child.
James remained living in Oak Bar, Siskiyou, California and appears with various family members in census records for 1900[4], 1910[5] and 1920[6].
James Rainey died in 1923[7]. He was buried at Fort Jones Cemetery[8].
