Margaret Mary Rainey was born about 1705; in Enniskillen, Fermanagh, Ireland; and married Robert T Elliot in 1723, as his 2nd wife, Mary Rainey, in Enniskillen, Fermanagh, Ireland[1][2]with 3 small boys (Johnston, Robert, Edward)[3][4]
Robert Elliot was in Scotland at an early age; "Many of the Elliot's who fled or were transported from Scottish borderlands during the purges of the borders in the early 1600's settled in County Fermanagh in Ulster Province".[5]After the death of Robert's first wife in 1722, it is believed Robert moved to Fermanagh County, Ireland, where most likely he had some relatives already living there; possibly for employment of some sort.
Robert Elliot and Mary Rainey, along with thousands of Scottish and Irish immigrants, migrated to the Pennsylvania Colonies; for cheap and plentiful lands, liberal religious beliefs, and low taxes, which were major reasons for choosing Pennsylvania as a place to settle; it is believed Robert Elliot and his family migrated to the Pennsylvania colonies in 1737[4][6]; most likely embarking from Larne, which is a major port for Northern Ireland; and arriving in the port of Philadelphia; the actual record of his departure has not been found, and the ports of departure and arrival can only be speculated upon. [5]during a time when "economic times were getting hard because landlords were trying to consolidate their lands leaving little room for expansion; along with more restrictions being placed on Irish exports; crop failure; and rapidly increasing rents for tenant farmers"[5]
According to the Biographical Annals of Cumberland Co., Pennsylvania "The first of the Elliott family to settle in Pennsylvania was Robert Elliott, who came from Ireland in 1737 with his wife Mary, and children: Edward, Thomas, William, Robert, Grisel (who became the wife of Joseph McMin), Mary (who married John Irwin), Margaret (married William Clark), Ann, David and James. They made their home in what is now Middlesex township, Cumberland county"[7]and is known as a pioneer and frontiersman of that time[8]
