Ezekial Rambo is a DAR Patriot Ancestor, A210172.

EZEKIEL RAMBO was born between 1750 and 1760 in Providence Township, Philadelphia Co., Pennsylvania. He was on the tax rolls of Providence Township in 1781, 1782, and 1783. By 1785, Ezekiel lived in East Hanover Township, Dauphin Co., Pennsylvania. He also served in the Revolutionary War in 1785 as a member of Capt. Ambrose Crain's Co., Dauphin Co., where his name was misspelled "Zeachaih." His son John was born 12 Mar 1786 and was baptized 14 May 1786 in the Swatara Reformed Congregation, Jonestown, Lebanon Co., Pennsylvania. Ezekiel Rambo appears in the 1790 census in Dauphin Co., but soon afterwards his family migrated to Hampshire Co., Virginia where his grandfather Peter Peters had settled and died in 1773. A few years later, the family moved to Washington County, Virginia where he paid œ100 on 12 Aug 1795 for 153 acres on the South Fork of the Holston River. On 25 Jun 1813, he obtained 12 acres on the waters of the south fork of Holston River, adjoining the land of John Rudy. According to a land document dated 23 Feb 1832, Ezekiel's wife was named ELIZABETH (?), but her maiden name is not known. She was also born between 1750-60. The aging parents lived with their youngest son David at the time of the 1830 Census, and it is probable that Elizabeth's death prompted Ezekiel to write his will in Aug 1834. Ezekiel died before 25 Sep 1837 when his will was submitted for probate in Washington Co., Virginia. Ezekiel and Elizabeth (?) Rambo had these children, although the birthdates of their daughters are not known for sure:

NANCY RAMBO, b. ca Oct 1779, d. Mar 1853, m. Samuel Thomas McCall

ELIAS RAMBO, b. Feb 1782, m. 1) Elizabeth Kincannon, 2) Mary (?)

MARY (Polly) RAMBO, m. John Rudy

JOHN RAMBO, b. 12 Mar 1786, d. 8 Sep 1865, m. Dorcus Davis

MOSES RAMBO, b. ca 1790, m. 1) Nancy Burgess, 2) Julia Gholson

ELIZABETH RAMBO, b. 31 Dec 1794, m. 1) John Lindsey, 2) John Wilson

RACHEL RAMBO, m. Mr. Woodby

DAVID RAMBO, b. ca 1800, d. 9 Jul 1866, m. Matilda Kelley

In 1809, Ezekiel petitioned the court for permission to build a mill pond.(Washington Co., Virginia will book 3, p. 153) "The Commonwealth of Virginia to the sheriff of Washington County greeting. " The return states on the 10th day of December 1808 "that the lands of no other person except Ezekiel Rambo will be endamaged .." recorded 19 Dec 1809.

The will of Ezekiel Rambo is dated 24 Aug 1834, proved 25 Sep 1837, and recorded in Washington Co., VA will book 7: page 235 as follows: "I, Ezekiel Rambo of Washington County, Virginia do make and ordain this my Last Will in Manner and form as followeth, that is to say in the place I give seven of my children Elias Rambo, Moses Rambo, and John Rambo, my sons, and Rachel Woodby, Polly Rudy, Elizabeth Wilson, and Nancy McCall all the moneys and debts owing to me, and all the personal property belonging to me at my death, to be equally divided between them, only I allow my three sons first named to have fifteen dollars each more than my daughters, some of whom have rec'd part of their share and have given receipts which is to be discounted out of their part to make them all equal. Secondly, I give to my youngest son, David Rambo, all that part of the tract of land that I now live on which lies on the north side of the south fork of Holston river, and joining the lands of James Rhea and David Buchanan to be freely enjoyed and possessed by him after my death. The sale of the estate on 18 Nov 1837 shows that most items were purchased by his children, Mary Rudy; Elizabeth Wilson; and David, John, John Jr., and James Rambo. Mary Rudy bought an axe for 55 cents; Elizabeth Wilson bought the dung fork for 30 cents; John Rambo bought the still and kegs for $15.18; James Rambo bought the rifle gun for $3.18. Two separate soldiers named Ezekiel Rambo are credited with the same service. Further research is needed to determine which soldier served in the Philadelphia Militia under Captain Amos Sturges. (See Rambo-90).
