Biography

JOHN RAMBO, b. 12 Mar 1786, d. 8 Sep 1865, m. Dorcus Davis

John was born 12 Mar 1786 and was baptized 14 May 1786 in the Swatara Reformed Congregation, Jonestown, Lebanon Co., Pennsylvania.

On 8 Aug 1811 in Washington Co., Virginia, a Presbyterian minister, Edward Crawford, married John Rambo and DORCAS DAVIS, who was born in Virginia about 1790. [ Details: Her name is Darky Davis in the marriage register. Edward Crawford was the third pastor of the Ebbing Spring Church, aka Glade Spring Presbyterian Church.] They were the parents of seven children, according to the 1830 census, and two more born after that time. He was administrator of his father's will in 1837, along with his youngest brother, David. John died 8 Sep 1865 of diarrhea, aged 82y 4m. Dorcas died shortly afterwards as her estate was inventoried and sold 9 Mar 1866. They had these known children:

JOHN RAMBO Jr., b. ca 1818, m. Isabella Neal

DAVID RAMBO, b. 11 Oct 1822, m. 1) ?, 2) Rebecca Jane Mock

WILLIAM DAVIS RAMBO, b. 24 Sep 1828, m. 1) Wright, 2) Widener

EZEKIEL RAMBO, b. ca 1831, m. Sophia Ann Neal

SAMUEL RAMBO, b. ca 1834, m. Martha E. (?)

The history of Old Glade Spring Presbyterian Church where they were married dates to the 1770s when a meeting house was built at Ebbing Spring 3 miles south-east of Glade Spring. The first structure on the present site was built in 1792 on land gifted by Francis Kincannon. It was replaced by a brick Sanctuary in the mid 1800s which was destroyed by wind on Dec. 9th, 2009.

The will of Ezekiel Rambo is dated 24 Aug 1834, proved 25 Sep 1837, and recorded in Washington Co., VA will book 7: page 235 as follows:

"I, Ezekiel Rambo of Washington County, Virginia do make and ordain this my Last Will in Manner and form as followeth, that is to say in the place I give seven of my children Elias Rambo, Moses Rambo, and John Rambo, my sons, and Rachel Woodby, Polly Rudy, Elizabeth Wilson, and Nancy McCall all the moneys and debts owing to me, and all the personal property belonging to me at my death, to be equally divided between them, only I allow my three sons first named to have fifteen dollars each more than my daughters, some of whom have rec'd part of their share and have given receipts which is to be discounted out of their part to make them all equal. Secondly, I give to my youngest son, David Rambo, all that part of the tract of land that I now live on which lies on the north side of the south fork of Holston river, and joining the lands of James Rhea and David Buchanan to be freely enjoyed and possessed by him after my death. In witness wherof I have unto set my hand & affixed my seal this 24th day of August in the year of our Lord 1834. Signed, sealed and delivered in the presence of us the witnesses s/ Ezekiel Rambo Jno Keys, D. Gilliland, Wm. Gilliland" The inventory of the estate was recorded in will book 9:75 and valued at $490.79 including notes due from Peter Mock, William Hanes, James Spear, David Rambo, James Wilder, Fulton Kelly, Aaron Rambo, Francis K Wright and John Reid. The sale of the estate on 18 Nov 1837 shows that most items were purchased by his children, Mary Rudy; Elizabeth Wilson; and David, John, John Jr., and James Rambo. Mary Rudy bought an axe for 55 cents; Elizabeth Wilson bought the dung fork for 30 cents; John Rambo bought the still and kegs for $15.18; James Rambo bought the rifle gun for $3.18. Other purchasers included John K. Gilliland, Edward Thomas, Francis K. Wright, And.w Edmondson, Edward Roe, John Reid, Thomas Wright, Thomas McGee, Reuben Widener, and Peter Rutledge.

John L. Rambo was executor of the estate of Samuel P. Neal circa 1856; cf. Ezekiel Rambo [#124244]. James McCall [#124211] married Mary Jane Larimore in 1841 in Washington Co., VA.
