Biography

George Rampy (Rumpi, Remby, Rimbi and other variations also appear, sometimes in the same record) was born in 1743, based on his age at death.

He was an 8 year old child when his parents, Johann Andreas Rampy and Elizabeth Magdalena Speissert of Pfaltz, Germany, sailed to Halifax on the Pearl, which arrived in Halifax on July 2, 1751[1] [2]

His parents died soon after his arrival. He and his sister Mary are noted as orphans on the victualling list of 1753[3].

It is understood that George lived with his 17-year old sister, Anna Barbara and her husband Marcus Gottfreid Leslie during this troubled time. Halifax was a new settlement, and its establishment triggered Father LaLoutre's war. The Foreign Protestants were mostly farmers who had responded to promises of land and equipment, but no land was available due to the conflict. They were segregated in a corner of Halifax and worked on building fortifications in exchange for the necessities of life until June 1753, when they were transported by General Cornwallis to the new settlement of Lunenburg, Nova Scotia.

Lunenburg was established on the ruins of an Acadian and Mi'kmaq settlement called Mirligueche, and the English protection was often harsh. Many settlers rebelled, some even sided with the Acadian and Mi'kmaq until the Acadian Expusion in 1755. During the next four years, Lunenburg was attacked nine more times. By the time George was 20, in 1763, peace was established and settlers from New England were establishing trading settlements like nearby Liverpool.

George's marriage records notes he was a solder (hessian), likely in the militia. This was still needed. During the American Revolution, the coastal communities of Nova Scotia were beset by American privateers, and the town of Lunenburg was devastated in a direct attack in 1775 and again in 1782.

On October 12, 1779, he married Anna Margaret Leslie[4], and their children included:

  1. Maria Barbara, born 1780[5], who married John Moore in 1802 and lived in Eagle Head, Nova Scotia (they had no children)
  2. George (Jr), born 1782[6], who married Eliza Peterson in 1807[4] . Eliza died in 1834, George lived until after 1850.
  3. Johan Friederich, born March 3, 1786 and baptized March 7, 1786[7], who married Elizabeth Bangs (1794-1837) in 1806, and died in 1871
  4. Johan Jacob was born March 12, 1788 and baptized on March 14[7]; his godparents were George and Johanna Sybilla Mauser[7]. Jacob died November 16, 17 1791 at the age of 3[4]
  5. Johan Andreas, born March 15, 1790 and baptized March 18[7], his godparents were George and Maria Catherine Leslie. On December 24, 1810, Andrew Remby married Mary Bangs in 1810[4], and he died in 1871
  6. Maria Sophia, born September 9, 1794 and baptized September 11[7]

Caspar George Remby died on April 11, 1795 in Lunenburg, at the age of 52[4] [8]
