Biography

John Ramsdell was born in probably England about 1602.[1] "John Ramsdell's origins are unknown, but it is presumed he was from England." [1]

John was among the first settlers of Lynn, Massachusetts, arriving in Boston in the summer of 1632 with the Winthrop Fleet [?? Winthrop arrived in 1630] and going shortly to Lynn. He was an indentured servant of Captain Nathaniel Turner and was probably unmarried when he emigrated.[1]

He married Priscilla ______

On 30 April 1657, John Ramsdell "age 55" deposed at Salem Court that "twenty five years ago , when he was a servant of Captain Turner, his master and other inhabitants of Lynn, before it was a town, fenced in Nahant" (Records and files of the Quarterly Courts of Essex County) John was a husbandman or farmer, owning property in the "Rumney Marsh" area of the part of Lynn that is now Saugus. As early as 1641, John was serving as a juror for both the General Court and on the Grand Jury. He was called as a witness in a number of cases. One of particular interest was the case against "Robert Burgis of Lin" for "bad and course grinding of both English and Indian corn". On 25 June 1650, John Ramsdell and Jenkin Davis were sworn as constables for Lynn.

In the TEG article titled, "John Ramsdell of Lynn MA" by Roselyn Listernick. Citation Information The Essex Genealogist. (Online database. AmericanAncestors.org, New England Historic Genealogical Society, 2011.) "John Ramsdell's origins are unknown, but it is presumed he was from England. Ramsdell is a Saxon word meaning winding valley, or extremity of a valley (Frank R. Holmes, Directory of the Ancestral Heads of New England Families 1600-1700 [Baltimore, 1980], cxcvi)" "John RAMSDELL 0f Lynn is the only known RAMSDELL who appeared in the Massachusetts Bay Colony in the 17th century. There was a Joseph RAMSDEN in Plymouth Colony, whose name was sometimes given as RAMSDELL, but usually RAMSDEN. [2] There is no evidence of a son Joseph in this article, and the named children Aquilla, John, Jonathan, Isaac, Praesilla, Hannah and Elizabeth were all born in the 1640s. Joseph RAMSDEN has been removed as son.

He died 27 Oct 1688 at Lynn.[1]

Objections to disconnecting Parents? His origins are unknown.

I did, Jillaine, very interesting article all around. Glad Chris pointed to it.

Bobby, if you're interested, you might want to read the article here which makes the case for John Ramsden (who, you're right, was not profiled by Anderson) being the same as John Ravensdale (who Anderson *did* profile).

It seems doubtful that the parents attached are correct.

Jillain, Anderson's GM Directory lists him as:

"Ramsden, John: Unknown (origins); 1632; Lynn [EQC 1:7; 26, 2:43; TEG 10:25-27.]

So he hasn't been fully profiled in GM.

Was he profiles by Anderson? Would be nice to strengthen the narrative and sources for this profile.

That poor Chase family has been twisted this way and that. I've detached Priscilla from it, and changed her LNAB to Unknown.
posted by Jillaine Smith
Has anyone found a source for his wife Priscilla's LNAB as Chase? I haven't been able to find one.

Ramsden Ramsdell-1 and Ramsden-10 appear to represent the same person because: Pretty obvious!

Yes certainly are. I'll remove them

Aren't these pages from TEG Volume 10 : 1990 that are pasted here all under copyright? And sections of the bio are also copied word for word.
